Good Morning good people of PocketGPS, I'm looking restore my tomtom One XL to its original backup but seemingly having some issues. I have a backup via TomTom Home and a 'manual' backup on my desktop, but after trying both methods I get stuck on the start-up/welcome screen.

I've had a brief look around here, also tried formatting the drive before restoring and using ClearFlash but to no avail. Any additional guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

Try formatting the unit. Don't use quickformat. Then restore the Explorer backup and see if that helps.

OP says he's already tried formatting the drive.

In order to get it going again, you could try pasting the Explorer backup back onto it, then remove all the "loose" files (not the folders) and connecting to Home.

That will hopefully install the latest software, so you should be up and running again, but obviously won't be back to "day one" contition, if that's what you actually wanted.

What's the reason for going back to "day one"? Just preference, or to fix a problem?

If you really need to go back to an earlier version of software we could probably find it for you, but there's no need to, if the latest version does the trick.

I absolutely want it back to "day one" condition! This is my second XL One Live after similar problems with the first one.

Original software, original maps, used for 5 days and in perfect working order. I then proceeded in using the Latest Map Guarantee and downloaded the latest maps (WITHOUT updating software) and it has been trouble ever since, constant weak signal, regularly 'no' signal and frequent jumping around of my position onto nearby roads. Totally unfit for purpose.

I've tried numerous configurations, latest maps w/o new software, latest maps w/ new software, old maps w/ new software. All of which give me the same trouble, the only configuration that worked was "day one" condition. So now to compound my misery, when I want to restore back to it, I get stuck with the start-up screen.

I have formatted the unit (Explorer - Right Click Drive - Format) and still get the start-up screen after restoring.

OK, so have you tried what I suggested, to get it back working?

Once you have done that, we can work out what software version you had originally and see if we can get you back onto that.

But we need to get it functioning first.

Sorry Andy, I have done as you have instructed and now running 9.058 which was offered to me via TT Home. The Tom Tom now boots up fine but I would imagine I would experience the issues said earlier with this software version.

OK, now look in your backup.
Find the ttgo.bif file and open it in Notepad.

On about the 9th line down it should have "ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=xxxx"

That number will be the software version, but without the decimal point, so e.g. v8.204 would appear as "8204".

Tell us that number and we can see if we can source the software.

Disclaimer... The bootloader may have also changed and we cannot easily roll that back to an earlier version, so this MIGHT not work, but personally I've never seen a software roll-back fail for that reason.

Hmm
v8.420 doesn't appear on TomTom's list of versions HERE, but I know they've missed stuff off there before.
It's not on a list I used to keep up to date HERE either.

So it's not one that I have a download link for right away, but I'll ask around and try a few options to see if I can work it out.

It would also help the detective work if you can tell me the number on the next line down in the ttgo.bif file, the one called
"ApplicationVersion=xxxx"

Anyone else know the "sweet" link? Wink

Slightly confused by this, the device is a One XL - Can you confirm this or is the device an XL IQ or something else as there have been lots of different XL units released, what does the ttgo.bif file claim the device actually is?

I cannot find any release of the 8,420 stated to be on the device from a backup, can you confirm thats the correct number, if the device is a One XL then it won't be running anything newer than 8,010 and it certainly wouldn't have been runing that when released - Mike

The original One XL [sd card only memory] came with v6 software. I spent more time resetting it than navigating with it - on average took 17 minutes to set a destination!

Sorry gents for the confusion, they have such similar names I just take it they are all similar. It is a 'One XL Live IQ Routes Edition', purchased from Halfords who had no quibbles in replacing my device first time around.

Little bits of information from backup ttgo.bif file which might help and you requested...

DeviceName=TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes Edition
DeviceVersionHW=XL LIVE IQ Routes Edition
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=8420
ApplicationVersion=1258
CurrentMap=United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland
CurrentMapVersion=840.2562

Thanks once again.

Ha Ha... Nearly!
TT dropped the "One" from the names of the 2009 XL range so it's actually the "XL Live IQ Routes Edition" Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I'm still drawing a blank for v8.420 but you have a PM message. Smile
