New tom tom

Hi i've currently got a a G0920,and it's time to uprade the maps,
tom tom are asking £70,so i was thinking about getting a Go550 live as they now come with 12 months free subs.

Are these new units any good ?

Welcome to the forum, lets take a few seconds to compare the two devices:

920:

Full Western_European Mapping
Full North American Mapping
Enhanced Poitioning Technology (EPT for use in tunnels)
mp3 player
FM Tx output

550 Live:

UK & ROI Mapping
Live services (requiring a subscription)
Considerably improved mount

The 920 does seem to have been dropped from any future Navcore updates whereas the 550 can be updated to Navcore 9 (not a wise move in the current state of the software). Both devices can run the very latest maps with no difference in terms of routing ability.

Out of the two I would stick with the 920 as its a far more capable device, that said if you don't use the extra bells and whistles feel free to down grade to the 550 - Mike
