Hey guys. Yesterday I plugged in my TomTom XL to TomTom Hme and it was searching for updates (GPS fix / Traffic etc) but I pulled out the usb cable without ejecting.
Now my TomTom doesn't boot up at all.
I have tried all the reset methods (paper clip).. 15 seconds - 30 seconds.. Hold down power button.. (held it down for more than 5 minutes!) and still nothing.
Plugging in TomTom via usb doesn't work as it is not recongised.
It is 100% charged..
What do you think is wrong with the device? It has been working for over 4 years... and yesterday Bam.. it went...
I have asked TomTom to repair it.. I need to send it in and they will quote me
Please Help me... thanks guys... look forward to your replies. |

Plug the unit in to your PC, reset the TomTom then let it boot up as far as is possible, if Home starts up shut Home down as its not needed for this.
Start Windows Explorer on the PC and look through the drive letters it lists, can you see one that applies to your TomTom? If so click it to open the drive, can you now see files and folders?
If you can check the above and report back we can then prescribe further action to take - Mike |

Plugging it into the PC only makes the Green LED charging light come on.. nothing else happens... it is not reconsigned by the pc as the device does not boot. Otherwise I could have just deleted all the files on he TomTom and started again but since the device does not boot and tomtom home wont recognise it because of that... I cannot do anything.
As mentioned in my first post I have tried all the methods...
many thanks |

If it won't boot up then clear flash won't be any use, get an RMA code and send it back for a repair quote - Mike |

Did you actually do a reset whilst it was plugged in to your computer? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Yep.
1. Plug TomTom to PC via usb cable.
2. Greed LED charging light comes on.
3. I try to turn devivce on by holding the power button on for around 1 minute.
Nothing.
4. Use a paper clip to hold down reset button for 1 minute.
5. Try turn on using power button.
Nothing.
6. Hold down power button and reset button (using paper clip) together for 1 minute.
Nothing.
I really have tried everything. Is there anything else I can do guys? Thanks |

Ask Mikealder here to post his guide for the battery removal of your unit, or close to it. Nothing else to lose. _________________ David |

As you have stated this "XL" has a reset switch I assume thats a hardware reset switch in the base so it shoulde also have an SD card slot, is there a memory card in the SD slot in the base of the device?
If not simply copy your back up to a memory card of sufficiant capacity and insert it to the slot and then try switching the device on, although I am starting to think that perhaps the reset switch is broken causing this problem (device in reset all the time due to the switch stuck in which is something that used to affect the x10 series) - Mike |

Hi. You are correct in saying that there is an SD card. I do not have an SD card in the unit at the moment or ever for that matter... but I will try and copy a backup to a spare SD and see what happens.
I also read about the reset switch being stuck problem.. but when I use the paper clip I can here the 'clicking' signalling the switch is going from the up position to the down position meaning it isn't stuck...
Am I correct in saying that my reset switch is still intact or could there still be a problem with it?
Many thanks for your help guys |

Try the SD Card route first as thats a nice easy way to recover a dead device if the internal Flash memory has fried itself, if that fails though AFAIK the only option is a return to TT or consider the purchase of a newer unit (probably work out around the same price as the repair TBH) - Mike |
