carnt make back up

hi,ive just been given a tomtom one xl,which has a fault,it shows a picture of the sd card being taken out of the slot with a big red crooss on it.anyway,i thought i would make a back up,just in casei messed it up,but when i try to copy ,it copyies so much and then when there is 3 minutes left it says cannot copy united kingdom and republic ireland,the file or directory is corruped and unreadable.what does this mean.does it mean that the maps r corrupted.is there anything i can try.im trying to fix this for my friend.many thanks in advance for any help.

Are you trying to make an Explorer (hopefully) backup rather than a Home backup?

If on a pc, try this:
Start--Run--cmd

and in the box that opens:
chkdsk x: /f where x: represents the drive of the tomtom unit/

ive got no idea what you mean,i just want to get my tom tom working.

Are you on a pc or a Mac? And if a pc, then the steps I provided will verify the physical validity of the drive
