Anyone looking for a new SD card could do worse than look at www.savastore.com I have just bought a 256 MB Fujifilm SD card (made in Japan) for £37.50 plus carriage and VAT (Total £48.47)
I have used it for my upgraded version of TomTom Navigator 3 and it works well in my iPAQ 2210. This card has been reduced from well over £100

I'd be interested if you could post the markings from the back of card, including whether they're portrait or landscape.

I may be able to identify the card's manufacturer if you do.

I wouldnt say it was anything to write home about, i picked up the recommended simpletech card from clove for around the same price

The problem with ebuyer.com is that you haven't a clue what manufacturer the SD cards will be - and that matters. Sandisk cards, which many manufacturers, particularly at the cheaper end of the market, rebadge can malfunction terribly. TomTom Navigator is especially good at showing up bad SD cards.

I do use ebuyer.com for quite a few things - but not SD cards.

At this time, my recommendations are:

512MB

Go to ValueFlash, order a Integral 512MB SD card, and mark the intended usage field "Must be Panasonic" (this is a double check, and was what one of their directors suggested to me). Whilst Integral do change manufacturers, ValueFlash have a batch of Integral 512MB SD cards that they know are made by Panasonic (I can confirm this - I have one of the cards here and it's definitely Panasonic). Panasonic made cards are arguably the best there are.

Note that this is specific to 512MB and ValueFlash - Integral cards bought elsewhere could be anything, and whilst ValueFlash used to have 256MB Integral SD cards that were Panasonic, I don't think they've got any of those left.

Total price - £99.45 including VAT and standard delivery (or £101.52 if you want Special Delivery)

256MB

Clove have a range of SD cards here.

SimpleTech don't themselves make any cards, but they seem only to supply 'good' cards - either Panasonic, or Toshiba (which tend to be slower than Panasonic, especially on write, but it's read speed that matters most and they're pretty much comparable).

The particularly good deal is the 256MB SimpleTech Pro-X SD card which you can find here.

Total price - £50.41 including VAT and delivery

The indications I have is that the 256MB SimpleTech Pro-X SD card is Toshiba. I used a 256MB Toshiba SD card (badged Lexar - though be very careful of the standard range of Lexar SD cards as they could be anything, including Sandisk - the 32x ones seem to be OK, but I wouldn't risk them) for the last 14 months in my system without any problems. A couple of weeks ago I bought the 512MB Panasonic SD card (badged Integral) mentioned above.

Neither of these are the cheapest SD cards available, but they should be types that work properly. All SD cards are not made equal - there are many forum posts from people having trouble with their systems that turned out to be bad SD cards, and there are quite a few people who've thrown away Sandisk made cards.

Most cards come with a long warranty - 5 years is not uncommon. I've bought three SD cards over the years, and I'd think within 5 years the card would be obsolete.

Shortly after I bought my iPAQ 3970 nearly two years ago, I bought a 64MB SD card - at the time it was all that was really affordable. A few months later, before I bought my first GPS setup, I bought a 256MB card, which I paid about 90 pounds for. A couple of weeks ago, I bought a 512MB card for 100 pounds.

I have no idea what manufacturer Kingston rebrand. I don't think it's the troublesome Sandisk, but I don't think it's one of the faster manufacturers either, such as Panasonic. If you post the markings from the back of the card, I may recognise them.

Incidentally, I have bought matched RAM from both Kingston and Crucial, and I've never been disappointed with either.

That's a style of markings that has been mentioned recently by others, but remains unidentified at present to my knowledge.

So far as anyone can tell, it's not Sandisk - that's the main thing!

Have just come home after an evening out and seen David W's question. Yes, the marking on mine is very faint, but it's the same as TomTooter described. I hadn't noticed the "Made in Taiwan" before - on the Fujifilm packaging it says made in Japan, packed in UK!
But the main thing is that TTN3 works well with this card, and it's faster at calculating A to B routes than my old 128 MB card with TTN2
