£87m a year from Speedcams but do they increase casualties?

Figures obtained through freedom of information requests by pressure groups the TaxPayers' Alliance and the Drivers' Alliance show the amount collected in UK speeding and red light offences caught on speed cameras in the financial period 2008-09 was £87,368,227.

This figure also includes fines from magistrates’ courts for speeding offences and neglect of traffic directions in 2008. "Neglect of traffic directions" offences caught on cameras often include red light and lane offences, though no breakdown is calculated by the Ministry of Justice or other authorities.

Top 10 areas with highest speeding fines caught on speed cameras in the UK are:

London - 2 police force areas (Metropolitan and City): £6,265,860

Avon and Somerset:3,491,340

Mid and South Wales - 3 police force areas (Gwent, Dyfed, Powys and S Wales): £2,915,340

Greater Manchester: £2,876,280

Thames Valley: £2,861,880

West Mercia: £2,795,340

Nottinghamshire: £2,380,980

Lancashire: £2,238,960

Hertfordshire: £2,168,280

Northumbria: £2,130,000

The report also says that casualty rates were dropping on Britain’s roads from 1979, but a slower rate of decline in road casualties has taken place since speed cameras were introduced in 1990. They claim that because the previous rate of reduction was not sustained this has led to over 1.5 million more casualties on UK roads between 1991 and 2007.

It is convenient that the graph illustrating their theory is only plotted up to 2007, as by about 2011 their analysis would indicate no casualties on UK roads! This report is based on completely fake science. Just ignore it.

The fact that the accident trend reversed at the same time as cameras were introduced does not establish a causual effect - it may be coincidental.

Do you know the major cause of all accidents - eating. 99% of those involved in an accident ate something in the three hours before the accidernt. What better "proof" do you need than that?
