http://www.tomtom.com/

How do TT come up with these figures that xx% of the road information changes every year? Do they also include speed limits and corrections to existing errors (which shouldn't really count) or is nearly a fifth of all US roads ripped up and re-laid every year?

my take on this is the % change is in their road/map/poi data and NOT the roads in the country.

eg if the europe map contains 100,000,000,000 'bits' of information (nodes (for junctions, curves) speed limit data, pois, direction data) etc and in a year they change/correct/add/remove 15,000,000,000 pieces of data (remember 5,000,000,000 of these could be simply removing extra nodes in the roads to make them straighter to cut down on file size (remember that?!) then they would class it as the roads changing by 15%.

i highly doubt that nearly a fifth of all roads in america change every year... however, tomtom's map info might change by actually getting some better poi locations etc - that could easily account for 10,000,000,000 :D

Exactly. The impression given is one that driving with out of date maps will results in navigation errors because of so many changes. However if moving a Stabucks 50 feet down the road counts as 1 change then i can see how such a high % is achieved. Especially galling when you can't be sure how many of these changes are corrections to their previously incorrect data.

Example: On the new map (850) my house and 40 others in my road have disappeared. Apparently my road now only has 2 houses (1-2). Presumably this is either 1 (or 38??) changes. When they correct it will this be another 1 (or 38 changes)?
