Before you do any of this please make sure ou have taken a Windows Explorer back up of the entire device as deleting files might leave you with an expensive door stop if you get it wrong!
Raster will remove all the image files that only get seen when you fully zoom out in Browse Map so they are of little use.
Have a good look through the Voices folder to get rid of the voices you don't need/ use, to find out which file coresponds to which voice right click the .vif file and choose Open With/ NotePad, AFAIK the UK voices are numbers 04 and 05, this should save you around 45MB if you get rid of everything exept the one you use.
Have a look in the LoquendoTTS folder and some of its sub folders, there will be other voices in here you probably don't use so remove them. Each Computer Voice (TTS) is around 30 to 40 MB in size.
Screen, if you have enabled screen capture clearing out any stored images can free up space.
In the zip folder you can remove the Dutch postcode files unless you go over their on a regular basis.
mp3 folder, any music in there can be deleted, note make sure you have "Show Hidden files" enabled on the computer as the mp3 tracks supplied pre-loaded with the device are hidden by default - Mike |

See if you still have the TT home install folder, I know it's not that big but everthing helps.
I found it easiest to remove unwanted voices via TT Home.
You could always delete the helpme folder too, as it seems to only have medical & breakdown info in.

I was going to dispute that and say I didn't think there were ANY hidden files on a TomTom, but I've just had a look through several of my "day one" backups for various machines and you're (partially) right!
On both my 720 and my son's 520, the three mp3s were set to be hidden.
But on both of the 940's that have been through my hands, they weren't.
I've never noticed any other hidden files though. Are there any more lurking inside any sub-folders? |

We have discussed this before!
I am not aware of any other hidden files just the three audio tracks, although it might be worth checking the sample audio book which is on the device as its possible that was hidden as well, I simply cannot remember the really fine detail - Mike |

Thanks for the replies.
I have already deleted a lot of the files you mentioned, except for the Raster ones and the Helpme, after having made a quite a few backup's over the years.
You don't mention the cspeech ones which will also save a lot of space. I deleted all files that are for other languages from all the various folders. I'm sure I can get rid of a few more and then manage to get my US map back to internal memory. |

I did... there's 5 or 6 of them (remember "Horton hears a Who"?) and they weren't hidden. |

There's the 'Audiobooks' file also, I think mine had 6 book extracts in it.
Edit: removing the samples in mp3 and audiobooks frees about 30Mb

| Quick question. When i get my 4Gb SD card can i move just the map folder or do you have to copy / move the whole contents of the internal memory to the card? i.e. can you have the NavCore / system files on the unit and the maps on the SD Card without duplication to avoid confussion / errors when updating? |

I think you can just move the map folder, but if you copy the whole contents then TomTom Home will recognise it as a device when it is in an SD card reader without the TT present, which obviously makes it easier.
It also still allows you to operate your tomtom, even though it isn't plugged in, which answers one question I've always had about that! |

Thanks for the replies.
Last night I copied over JUST the North America folder and its contents to the SD card then let the Home software remove that map as part of it's effort to get more space on the internal card.
The UK map installed OK and I've now got some room back on the internal map too.
I think I'll leave the US map on the card for now. It works and that's all I'm worried about.
On a side note... Just how does TomTom think, in this day and age, that deleting a user's favourites after a map upgrade is acceptable practice  You'd think that by now they would work out a way of protecting the contents, but also updating it to the latest format - not leave us with all this 'edit favourite via TTHome' stuff... Grrrrr!!

Look on the bright side - with many of the earlier Navcore updates required before being able to install the new map, the 'Operate my Go' function was unusable until they ...eventually... got round to supplying the missing file allopwing you to do this.
