Haven't noticed this before doing the Map update to 845 Western Europe.
But now when I turn the device on it starts up to the map display, appears to hang, then the screen shows it's writing to the memory, then restarts.
It's then okay.
Doesn't do this every start up, but probably 1 in 3.
Any ideas?

No problem there, the Tomtom is left pretty much connected and I have it set to turn off when power is turned off.
Only seems to have started since the latest map updates were installed, although I can't be sure.
Also the grabbing of satellites seems to take forever now, I can go 5 minutes before it'll get a lock on on most occasions.
I know there's a link to removing the satellite info from these devices (the latest positions) but for the life of me. I can't find it.
If anyone else knows how to do this, I'd be grateful for the info.

Use Windows Explorer to locate the folder "ephem" on the device and delete the files within this folder.
Use Windows Explorer to locate the folder where Home stores downloads:
Your Computer Name/ Documents/ TomTom/ Download/ complete/ ephemeris and delete the files within this folder on the PC.
Connect the device to the PC and use TomTom Home to update the device, this should download and install new ephem data for the quick GPS fix on the device - Mike |

Great job Mike. Removed the ephem from the Tomtom and haven't installed the update satellite positions.
So in theory, it should have problems finding satellites, right? Wrong, it's straight in.
Just to prove the point, I drove about 25 miles away to Bideford this afternoon, with Tomtom off.
Did what I needed to do, turned satnav back on, and it got the satellites within a fraction of a second!!
What is the point of the updates to the satellite positions if without the information, it appears to be quicker getting a lock?
By the way, it's still doing it's turning on, write something to memory, and then restart!
What's that about?

What exactly do you mean by showing that it is writing to memory?
When I have seen something similar you get a File Access Error error message come up, and then a reboot.
This usually points to a corrupted file on the TT, or one that has somehow been set to read only.
Try doing a full Windows Explorer backup followed by a full format of the internal memory as FAT32, then restore the backup. |

I get a hard drive symbol down in the bottom right of the screen, with a bar gradually increasing toward it. There is no error messages, and after restarting it's fine possible for two or three starts, then it'll do it again.
As I said, almost like it's writing to memory.

I don't bother with the qGPS updates as they are really not needed with the modern hardware, waste of time/ effort and TBH something I consider was created by a marketing department (over hyped).
As to the other issue try the Clear Flash utility as thats well know to address all sorts of strange behaviour, although from what you describe it sounds like its installing the boot loader update when it starts up, in this case clear flash is about the only option open to you - Mike |

Any downsides?
From what I see on the Tomtom site, I may have to reactivate my maps, I've just downloaded the latest Western Europe and don't have any codes that I'm aware of, what happens?

You have misread what it says on the site.
One thing that the Clear flash often cures is IF the user has trouble activating his/her map.
That is NOT your problem.
There is no downside to download and running it. We wouldn't suggest it if there were.

Many thanks dhn, just a bit concerned regarding reactivating my maps after reading the warning on Tomtom support.
Ran the tool a few times as instructed. Started it up three times so far and no restart!
Watch this space, but looking good.
