The TomTom website support section says you cannot change the battery inside the device. Why then are there websites that sell replacement batteries for various TomTom units?
Is this simply a ploy by TomTom, so that the user is "forced" into buying a new device?
After all, the sat nav unit can plan "Walking Routes", but this is pointless if the battery life is poor. Obviously, there is no problem when driving as the unit is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket.
If it is possible to change the battery, how difficult and what problems can occur?
The unit is approx 2 1/2 years old with the latest map on board V845.2645

TomTom never intended the battery to be replaced by the "average user" (whatever that is!).

It *is* possible, if you have the necessary skills and some basic tools, but if TT were to say so, they would be inundated with claims from people who had damaged their units while attempting it.

One of the regulars here, Mike Alder, has written a walkthrough with pictures on changing the battery on the TomTom x20 rage which are identical to the 30 models.
Do an "all words" search for "Battery Replacement" using the "Search" feature at the top of this page and restrict the search to just the TomTom PND part of the forum. That will soon find you a large topic started by 'Draysoft' called "Tomtom Go 720 Replacement Battery".
Mike's walkthrough (and warnings) is the 14th post in that topic.

You can find the thread Andy is refering to by clicking Here Please take some time to read all of the thread though as there are some very good tips and tricks that other users have posted in the thread such as using WD40/ duck oil to act as a solvent for the glue holding the battery to the PCB.
Its certainly not difficult to swap out the battery in an x20/ x30, the last one took less than 15 minutes - Mike
