Hi
I have just been driving around Cornwall and the sat nav kept wanting to take me down unclassified roads, i believe because they are classed as 60mph but is it possible to tell the sat nav to only use main roads or is there a new sat nav with the same facility as i'm going to get a new one shortly.

Thanks

you could try "avoid unpaved roads" in the navigation settings. however as the americans refer to tarmacced roads as 'pavements' i have a sneaky feeling this will simply avoid dirt-tracks as opposed to what we brit's would consider an unpaved road - i.e. one which has no footpath!

if it's any consolation i've also found that the newer garmin firmware DOES tend to favour the back roads - this has always been an issue with garmin in particular but recently it seems to be more prominent... i've emailed our coontacts at garmin about this and got the usual 'we'll pass on the info' reply Very Happy

Yes the Garmins are notorious for taking you down every possible back road or country track, when a main road could have been used

For total assurance, you will probably need a Navigon model compatible with either their Truck or Motorhome add-on (about an extra £100) so you can really select vehicle type and road status and avoid these back roads if they are too much for you! Garmin and TomTom also do truck units, as dedicated models

Alternatively I find Navmans quite good at keeping to main roads and motorways (they have their new Mio Navman 575 out with IQ Routes and LearnMe which over time learns the roads you like to travel, and the speeds you travel them. Its just £119 at Staples.co.uk or under £100 for the 475 which is about the same, except 4.3" display not 4.7")

Didn't I read somewhere that Navman is pulling out of the satnav market?

there was a suggestion from an insider that the Mio/Navman devices were going to become solely Mio devices. However, this was denied officially by Mitac (who own Mio/Navman and Magellan)
