Thanks Hun ... Smile

It's interesting to see that my TomTom is no longer sold but can be bought as a refurbished product circa £99.99.

Hi everyone,

My Tom Tom is dead ( Short Story ) and Andy knows why ..... Wink and is sworn to secrecy..... Rolling Eyes

Which unit would you recommend to replace it that accepts PGPSW data still?

It is such a shame that our data cannot be installed by TomTom themselves as Andy proved to me that PGPSW's data is far superior.

Nite

Did you drop it in the Tea?

The latest TT models have LIVE information about Petrol Prices, Google Searching, Traffic Info, etc. but I know nothing about these so can't advise one way or another.

However, for "old fashioned" SatNav duties, TomTom's OutLet Store has a selection of refurbished products.

In the (very) short time that you had your ONE IQ SatNav before you killed it did you like it? if so, it's on sale for £99.99, the XL IQ Routes Europe edition for £114.99 and the GO x30's start at £119.99.

If you do not want the Bluetooth, Built-in FM transmitter, mp3 player, etc. capabilities of the GO's, I'd suggest the XL IQ Routes Europe.

EDIT- You can get a further £8 off of the above prices by entering the code TOMTOM456 when ordering. (I wonder how much discount the code TOMTOM789 would give? if any)

Paula, whatever you do ultimately buy, DO NOT forget to:-

1) Take a Windows Explorer backup of your pristine device, and
2) Use a new/different e-mail address if you are going to connect it to TomTomHome.

and in that order.

Thanks Guys for all your help and advice.

I still have a Drivesmart which in many ways as a Speed Camera Detector is better than the Tom Tom.

It also picks up Hand Held Radar guns.

One of the members here uploaded the PGPSW database on to it last year for a trip with my friend Claire ( who was over here from the USA ) to the West Country last June.

I had to post it to him as he lives far away and he posted it back but, of course, I need to know how to update it on a regular basis.

It performed to perfection.

I have asked Andy if he could come over when it's convenient to him and update the unit when he has a moment and I will double up the cake rations.

Here is some info on the DS.

and: http://www.radardetectors.co.uk/drive_smart_our_review.htm

For a non techhie like yours truly, you can see it's hard to sort out !!!

I don't remember you mentioning that.
As you referred to the Drivesmart "picking up handheld radar guns" I thought you meant it was a detector rather then using a database like the TomToms do.

If it isn't actually "detecting" but knows where the hand-held radar guns are lurking by previous knowledge, then it's no different from the TomTom and the PGPSW database - hand-held radar guns are in the "Mobiles" categories.

Now, you're allowed to use your downloads of the database on up to three devices, so there's no problem if he used YOUR downloads, but if he put a copy that HE downloaded onto it, he could get into trouble for breaking the terms of the Licence, and if the data ever got out into the big wide world, he could get banned as it would be traceable back to him, so be careful with it!

I must admit, I don't remember that either!
Very kind offer re: the cakes, but I probably wouldn't have the first idea how to load stuff onto the Drivesmart, I've never even seen one!

...and if it is a detector isn't a) illegal in the UK and b) a bit pointless as by the time your detector has told you you've been "zapped" you've been caught anyway?

drivesmart isn't a detector - it uses a POI system albeit with some directional capabilities. they look like taxi-meters!

This is what it said in the PGPSW test of the unit.

See review by Darren Griffin

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/drive-smart.php

On the front and rear of the unit is a pair of laser diodes that can detect the beam from a laser speed gun. We were able to test this with a laser gun and the receptors correctly detected the laser beam and alarmed. Whether such an alert would be of any real use is a moot point as it is more than likely that your speed will have been recorded by the operator at this point.

There is discussion about laser scatter where the detector picks up scatter from a laser unit targeted at another vehicle, possibly the one ahead of you. In this case it may give you sufficient time to reduce speed before you are targeted but it has not been possible to test this in a real world scenario!

At the end of the day, I would say its better to have it than not!

PS.....I forgot to mention last night that Drivesmart also had the Pulse Master as an optional extra. A member of Mazda enthusiast forum mx6.com had one fitted to his car. Sadly DS folded and never developed new products.

Optional Accessories

Pulse Master
The Pulse Master is an external laser detector that can be remotely mounted under the bumper or behind the radiator grill etc. It offers much improved detection capabilities.

As the spread of a laser beam is so small and operators are taught to aim that beam at the number plate it follows that the optimum location for a detector is in this general area.

Laser Defender
The Laser Defender is a controversial piece of equipment. What it does is listen for laser beams. When it detects one it sends a response which has the effect of causing an 'error' on the laser gun and prevents it from calculating a speed.

I was witness to a test of this system using an early prototype and it worked spectacularly well. It was able to detect beams from a laser gun over a mile from the target and responded with a cloaking signal that successfully defeated the laser gun!

The problem is the use of such a device is very much a grey area. Although no prosecutions have been successful there is the possibility that the use of such a device will attract the attention of the Police who may decide to prosecute for 'Perverting the Course of justice' or other offences concerned with the interference of Police etc.
