TomTom Brodit Mounting Solutions (on the cheap)

Whilst the Brodit/ ProClip web sites tell you this little “ball” is intended for use with the car kit it can be used to convert the TomTom windscreen sucker mounts supplied with the following devices:

One Easy Port style mount
One Third Edition
One XL (Original style)
Any XL using Easy Port style mount
Start/ Ease
x20/ x30 Standard mount
x20/ x30 Easy Port mount
x40/ x50 Active mount



A simple rather unassuming part from Brodit/ ProClip has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for TomTom PND devices which allows users to go away from using the windscreen sucker mount at far lower cost than previously seen, due to re-use of donor parts from the TomTom windscreen mount.

Previously switching to the excellent Brodit/ ProClip system was rather costly as it involved the purchase of a dedicated holder for your navigation device, the method employed here offers a far cheaper solution to providing a quality holder for your hardware.

So what’s this new rather simple part actually do, its intended for use with the TomTom iPhone car kit and lets a user convert the car kit from a windscreen sucker to a dash mounted ProClip without loosing any adjustment and it won't fall off as its secured to the dash in your chosen location. The same diameter “Ball” has been in use for a number of different TomTom PND units so this little part can be used with far more devices than just the iPhone car kit.

The Brodit/ ProClip mounting system offers the owner a variety of mounting positions to fit most vehicles through the use of a clip which is specific to any car make, model and year of vehicle that you own. The ProClip is simply inserted between gaps in the trim of the car to provide a very stable and secure mounting platform to which you screw the device mount to. When you sell the car the ProClip can be removed leaving no screw holes/ damage to the trim, in fact you wouldn't even know is was ever fitted once removed, or you can opt to leave the ProClip in the car for the next user to attach whatever phone holder or PND holder they want by only having to change the device adaptor.

Clicking any of the above links in red will take you to a post detailing the simple steps required to convert the mount supplied with the TomTom to a Brodit/ ProClip compatible mount using the 533091 “Ball” In most cases the only tools involved are simple screwdrivers, only the x40/ x50 is slightly more difficult and as that is available in Brodit compatible form from TomTom (Only in Europe not the USA for some strange reason). Should you want a Brodit style mount for the x40/ x50 I would suggest its easier to purchase the accessory mount rather than modify the supplied unit, that said its still possible to see how to convert the supplied mount by clicking the above link.

It is also possible to use this part to convert the x40/ x50 mount with the integral RDS-TMC receiver but that is far more involved as the aerial cable exits the mount through the ball, as modifying this unit involves drills and soldering iron etc I have chosen not to include it for now as it also requires an external connection to your car aerial. Whilst all this is possible its far from easy and probably not worth the time taken to process and upload the images let alone write up a guide on swapping the mount - Mike
