ProClip announce range of iPad Cradles

ProClip, Brodit's US arm, have unveiled a range of cradles designed specifically for Apple's iPad.

The range consists of a choice of black or white cradle/monitor mount and a black cradle with tilt/swivel. The cradles have been designed so that they can be used both in the home/office or in-car.

With other solutions are in the pipeline including an adjustable version able to accommodate iPad's in cases and a desktop stand these look like the perfect solution for mounting your iPad.

The only issue being, of course, that our Euro boxes are rather less commodious than your average yank tanks. So unless you drive a HGV there may not be room for your iPad up front.

All the versions can be coupled to any of Brodit's other accessories such as their ProClips or other solutions such as the headrest mount. That solution would make sense although two iPads in the back seats is a very expensive solution to keeping the kids quiet!

On a more serious note these mounts/device could possibly be very dangerous. In most UK cars the only safe place to mount these will be in the center of the dash covering controls or the radio, anywhere else and the air bags will be a big risk.

I do recall a conversation a few years ago which involved fitting a 42" Plasma screen instead of a windscreen so the outside world could be seen along with a navigation display - I can't put my reply on here due to the auto censor but the conversation did take place! - Think power cut at 70MPH - great fun (not).

Next best thing, we can fit an A4 size device to the dash and obscure not only part of the forward view but subject anyone in the car to a projectile if the car crashes and fires off the air bags let alone mask out controls from easy reach, my iPhone covers the drivers side temp control but as I never adjust this from 19 Deg C the position of the device was deemed acceptable (to me) - Put an iPAD in the same spot and I wouldn't be able to operate any of the center consol or see out of at least one fifth of the windscreen! - Mike

All valid points of course but you seem to think that joe public is safe unless god forbid they dare to consider using an iPad as a nav device!

I've witnessed countless numbers of drivers with satnav's mounted smack bang in the middle of the windscreen, directly in front of the drive and any number of installs of other devices that partially obscure the air bag.

If we can try and ignore the anti-Apple/iPhone/iPad brigade for a moment then this may well suit some vehicles such as HGV's Motorhomes, vans etc. Personally I'd quite like a headrest mounted cradle to allow an iPad to be mounted for the benefit of rear seat passengers.

How people choose to use these is their own decision at the end of the day and whilst no-one wants to see an install that might endanger someone, an iPad, installed sensibly and safely is no more a distraction (when used as a GPS) than any other satnav. Indeed it may well be safer if info can be read and digested more easily?

Fully agree Darren, I'm guessing like me you have your iPad on pre order ready for delivery a week on Friday ?

I've had the opportunity to use one for a weekend and you won't be disappointed, the only noticeable problem I found was the known issue with the WiFi

Funny.... when both my 8 year old daughter and wife saw the iPad they asked if they would be getting one, it could be a very expensive gadget.
