Thanks for that Alleycat.

Just restarted the computer and a box appeared saying that the download was successful ? Appeared to be the driver for the new cable. Went to MM and reset the details for Garmin, went to 'Send to GPS' and the three choices were not greyed out, looked hopeful and then a box appeared, 'you need online activation' ?????

I do not have access at the moment to my serial number, I will get my hands on it next Monday.

What a performance!

What will the next instalment contain?

Norman.

Alan

Just had a warning box...'MM OS Edition Version 5'!

This is then replaced with the warning...'etrex software version 2.14'

I put this into a search and was directed to the Garmin site. It appeared to me to be offering an update relating to Vista.

Can you offer any knowledge about this?

Not yet giving up.

Norman.

You say GPSU is not compatible...

You should be able to save your track from GPSU as a TXF (Maptech track) that MM will read.

Roger

That is very interesting, just transfered a route to GPSU, up it comes, excellent.

Can't see where the TXF might be, could you point me towards TXF location.

Sorry if I seem dim ( my description of my tech knowledge), but I do struggle with these ........machines.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Hi Norman,

Memory Map needs to be properly licensed for certain functions like GPS interface and printing. Up to v5.1.3 (look in Help : About) it requires your registration name and two serial numbers (one from the packing, the other sent by MM). After v5.2.x there is a more complex on-line license manager which is why I suggested you don't upgrade past v5.1.3 yet).

I'm not sure what the various upgrade messages refer to, one is possibly about the firmware in the etrex, but I'd ignore them for now.

Yes it is possible to use GPSU as an "intermediary" but there are several disadvantages (in addition to the extra complication). When you save or load files, there should be a small "window" to enter the file name and a "pull-down" list below of file types. Both MM and GPSU support .TXF (Maptech Tracks) or the most common .GPX (GPS Exchange) format.

However, now for the snags: Fisrtly you need to pay for a GPSU license to handle large files. Secondly, Garmins record their tracks in what they call an "Active Log". Each time it loses GPS signals (perhaps for just a few seconds, which can happen quite often with the older receivers) it starts a new Log. Thus the track log for even a few hours can contain many track fargments. Now, MM when connected to a GPS does an excellent job of joining all these fragments into a single continuous track. But I don't think it does this for imported files, so you might end up with an unmanageable number of "Active Log" entries. (Note: "saving" the track within the etrex joins up these fragments, but the resulting track does not contain any time data).

So, you may need to wait until you can find your serial number, although MM Tech Support should be able to email your license details again tomorrow. Alternatively, you could apply for a 30 day demo/trial license from the Memory Map website, but that will be using the new software and License Management system.

Cheers, Alan.

At last all is as it should be.

The new cable, and driver work!

Memorymap have been very good, they answered my email by sending me a pdf file of correct settings and the way to connect it all. I was again stopped by a box saying I needed online activation. As I now have a different email provider, I couldn't retrieve my password. Again Memorymap came up trumps and found it for me.

I now look forward to downloading walks from the walking websites.

Once again many thanks for all your help.

Hi Norman,

Thanks for the update, I'm pleased that it's finally all working again.

Yes, I did consider referring you to the Memory Map Support Forum or their Technical Support, but their forum doesn't send out email notifications and occasionally emails to TS get "lost" in their spam filter.

If you have any further problems (or want new features) bear in mind that both MM and Garmin offer free downloads of upgrades to their software. But there's a lot to be said for "If it ain't broken..." and the latest MM software does have a rather different "look and feel".

Cheers, Alan.

Alan

I'm just happy that it works as it should.

I have some questions on how walks are transferred from MM to the etrex, in your opinion where would be the best place to ask?

Regards.

Norman.

Hi Norman,

Well, there's the help file within MM and their Support Forum which has various "stickies" or you can ask a specific question.

Or just continue asking questions here or in the PGPSW Memory Map section.

Maybe a couple of simple definitions are useful: A "Route" is generally what you plan to do (i.e. sent from MM to GPS), a "Track" is what you actually did (usually sent from GPS to MM). Note that Memory Map differentiate between "Marks" and "Waypoints" but they're virtually the same thing.

Cheers, Alan.

Alan

Hopefully my questions will be clear.

We are retiring early and plan to tour round the UK. We enjoy walking and sites like 'Walking world' offer walks with GPS info as well as written instructions.

Question one...how many walks can be downloaded to eTrex at any one time?

The walks seem to go in as numbered waypoints...can titles be added to them?

Would it be better to download and save to my laptop (and take it with us)and export to eTrex as and when we want to use them?

I'm sure there is more to ask, I will run through some downloading and see what comes to light.

Regards.

Norman

Hi Norman,

It depends on the exact model of Etrex (there are lots) but typically Garmins support "50 routes". However, that can be very misleading because a route requires waypoints and the maximum is usually only 500 (sometimes 1000). So 50 routes could only have an average of 10 waypoints each, even if you haven't used any already.

Yes, you can usually name routes and rename waypoints on the GPS, but it's much easier/quicker within Memory Map. Waypoint names can be quite limited (perhaps only 6 characters) and MM can be set up to select the number of characters transferred to the GPS.

So yes, I'd recommend taking your laptop with you if you can.

Cheers, Alan.

Alan

Just thought of another question.

When a route is downloaded from MM, a circular route that starts and finishes from the same point, how do you get eTrex to follow the entire route and not as it appears to do, just points to where you are standing? Is that clear?

Just tried a quick walk from my front door and eTrex just kept pointing the way I had come, and not following the route.

Regards.

Hi Norman,

I believe the (only) method is to initially "GoTo" the second waypoint in the route (i.e. the first you need to head for) and then when you get close to that you can select "Follow Route" and it will work correctly for the rest of the (circular) route.

A point you might want to check (and another reason for taking your laptop) is that when you delete a Route on (most) Garmins it deletes the route but leaves all its waypoints intact! It can then take a long time to delete all those waypoints individually, so you may need to use "Delete All (waypoints)", but then you have to reload all the other waypoints/routes again. A work around (if you have the foresight) may be to use a different waypoint "category" for route(s) and then delete just that category.

Cheers, Alan.
