do you have auto-brightness on? if it was a brighter day then the screen would be brighter and use up more juice. a darker day would result in the screen being dimmed, using less power and therefore having more juice left to actually charge the battery.

I have got a feeling if your iphone starts to get hot it stops charging. Also when using the tomtom car kit the the battery symbol changes between lightening/and a shaving type plug (I know the lightening means it's charging not sure what the shaving plug symbol means)

I have already exchanged one tomotm car kit as it stopped putting any charge what so ever in me phone (ie flat battery in about 75 mins) Although the tomtom car kit still had power going to it ie showed it was docked and could test the gps signal.

Been pretty much the same weather all the time. Dull and showery.

I'll check out the difference in the charging symbols.

I think I've got it on 60% brightness with no variation.

As an aside, I found out today that the Eastern Europe app has the major roads of Austria on it, which helped a bit on the cross border stuff going into Hungary.

The 'shaving plug symbol shows that you have the device plugged into external powder but the battery is fully charged.

FWIW I use the Kensington LiquidAux with my 3Gs and it always recharges the device even when using the GPS.

I'm beginning to wonder if the USB connector has a problem at certain angles. While driving across Europe to Hungary this week we have used the TT holder on the passenger side so that any route changes can be made more easily. There's been no charging problem.

When I've had the problem, I've had the holder fixed low on the right hand side in the corner of the windscreen with the wire wrapped around the outside of the dashboard and across to the power supply. Not under any apparent tension, but running in a different direction.

I've not noticed any drop outs in the power when using CamerAlert. But small ones may be missed? Or are the USB connections sufficiently different that the "connected" symbol is generated by one connection wire and the actual charging current by a different wire?

Can't check the connection on the TT app as it runs in full screen mode with no "top bar" for the display of symbols, time etc.

I have a USB port in my car for iPod/iPhone integration. I have the same problem with it not being able to supply enough charge while Tomtom is running.

I have found that disabling 3G and bluetooth helps extend battery life.

I had the same problem using cheapo ciglighter/usb chargers.

I bought a belkin one and it now charges a treat even with tomtom running.
