Modmyi

Reading a headline here at Modmyi it seems that the multitasking capabilities of the new 4.0 iphone firmware may not all it's craked up to be.

Many of us Cameralert users are hoping to be able to run the app alongside some sort of navigation app to be the ultimate speed camera warning system. But due to concerns over performance it would seem that apple will have the last say over who's apps can and can't use it.

While the 3gs is more than capable of handling most multitasking combinations, the 3g and 2g may be left wanting due to slower processors and lack of memory, so Apple will need to dictate the use of this update so not to overload these older devices. Hopefully we will know more in a few days after tomorrows 4.0 sneek peak!

i remember a rumour from a 'trustworthy source' (this source has apparently leaked correct info previously) that OS4 would NOT be available for the 2G iphone, only 3G and above. maybe THIS is the reason why?

I have not read that personally but it is easlily believable. A freind of mine with a 2g is convinced this update won't be available to him but we will find out soon enough! Confused

one example from back in january:

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/iphone_os_4_to_include_multitask_support/

Quote:
Along with multitasking for background apps, iPhone OS 4.0 will allegedly include system-wide multi-touch support, OS interface improvements that make navigation easier, and improved contacts and calendar syncing. Apparently the 4.0 update will be compatible with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, but not the original iPhone model.

Hi...been following the announcement on Engadget today and as a 3G owner I'm gutted its only the 3GS (and latest gen Touch) that will have multi-tasking

Apple will no doubt argue the performance angle, but I'm sure they will also love to see the 3G and earlier owners upgrading to whatever comes out in the summer.

...not true multitasking...

This is not what we wanted to hear. While it suggests that it'll keep the main seven services running it doesn't tell us if the app will still respond whilst backgrounded. From what I read on these reports it would indicate that it doesn't. Great if you are in your gps prog and need to start the ipod or check an email and return to gps but if you were looking to run CamerAlert in the background while navigating with TT it will stiffle the CamerAlert reports! I'm hoping that the pudding will provide the proof!

It's not true multitasking either is it? More like task switching with some functions allowed to run in the background while others are simply frozen, returning you to the point they were at when you switched. Although location awareness is one of these functions it remains to be seen if two location aware applications will be allowed to do this or will be throttled to task switching.

CamAlert doesn't appear to be able to operate at the same time as any other App on the iphone4 (iOS 4.0.1), which is a complete and utter waste.

TomTom's camera database, while probably using PocketGPSWorlds database, is probably only updated once every millenium, so CamAlert is the logical addon.

Come on guys either get the App to function in the background, or find a away to make the cameras appear as POI's as per Windows Mobile etc, or you've lost my subscribtion after 2 years.

woah! chill out there!! it's been stated many times that this is in development! iphone apps wanting to use the 'multitasking' feature (i.e. running in the background) need specifically coding - it's not an automatic thing.

the current development version is working as a background app albeit with a few minor bugs still to kill. it will need beta testing with a larger number of users and then it will be released to the appstore as a free update.

we've stated all along that we would rather get the app working correctly from teh outset of release rather than rushing it and messing it up and having to release 4 or 5 mini-updates to get it working like it should have in the first place.

just to confirm, and i know this was an old post, i've had navigon, tomtom, copilot all running in the background giving me directions while navmii was in the foreground.

they can all run at the same time although at junctions it was a cacophony of noise...
