Hi,

I have just got a new Renault Espace, and with the type of windscreen, I am having problems picking up a signal.

Can anyone recommend a permanent mount so that the charger, traffic cable and also the cable for an external aerial to be plugged in?

I know when I had a 500 unit, all the cables plugged into the mount, and I am looking for something like this, so save the missus plugging in three cables.

Many thanks

Jason

Jason, Have a look at This from carcomm, it doesn't include the external aerial cable for the GPS though as thats on the back of the case on the x20/ x30 series and doesn't pass through the base of the device. I am not aware of any mount for an x20/ x30 that has the external GPS aerial cable passing through it - Mike

Do you need the external antenna plugged in? It should work fine without?

I reviewed the Carcomm cradle here and they are still my favourite solution but as Mike said, they do not have the external antenna socket as it is so rarely required these days.

Thanks for getting back to us. This looks ideal, but shame about the aerial.

The TT unit was fine in my Laguna, but for some reason in the Espace it has real difficult in picking up, and staying locked onto a satellite signal. I know there are two slots at the top of the windscreen that I could use to position the unit, but this would mean the cables 'dangling' from top of the windscreen.

The unit is a refurb model from tomtom, as my 920 suffered a fault and they replaced it with a 930. It is only 2 months old (to me). Could it be an issue with the unit?

My 07 Laguna was fine, but my 04 Espace is a nightmare.

Thanks for the help

A GPS re-rad would answer your needs and negate the need for the aerial connection to the device, whilst these have been outlawed for use in the UK by OFCOMM you wouldn't get caught as the power levels are too low to be detected from a vehicle that is moving, and when stationary the kit is de-powered, see Here for one such solution - Mike

A re-Rad would resolve the problem but doesn't explain why it has an issue with reception when it ought to work fine Confused

A friday afternoon windscreen with a thicker than usual titanium coating in the glass would do this unless the 930 is faulty, I have seen the odd BMW and Renault that have issues with GPS reception, and yet same model/ year etc with the same type of screen on a different car and the same GPS will work - Mike
