Purchased a NEW 750Live - three days ago !!
nice bit of kit very similar in all respects to the 740Live -- now relegated to the wifes car!!

set up OK -- but only likes a Sony Ericsson Phone..

Went to Tom-tom home and did all the normal update my Tom -- all OK .
The it said my map was an old version and I could down load a new version..

OMG -Why did I even start..

Clicked on down-load and three hours later it had finished !
with a warning screen that it had encountered Errors! but to continue to the install..
1 1/2 hours later it had not finished the install but came up with a message that the install had failed..

So I disconnected -- and tried to operate my Tom -- NO MAPS !!

presumably at the start of the install it gets rid of the old maps -- then installs the new -- which failed..

Was onto TOM-TOM at 9am and was walked through - on the phone for over 2 hours..

deleted the complete information from the 750L and started over..
Looked at the downloaded map -- and it was to big to fit on the device..So the nice girl told me what files to delete from the new map -- all the voices are redundant -- as it comes with 15 different languages. all in massive files -- don't need Croatian or Russian even Luxembourg!!!

Eventually got the file down small enough to load [the internal memory is less than 2GB]
then started putting all the bits back --Post codes- voices- map overlays etc-
I would not have had a clue had it not been for the girl on the end of the phone..
Eventually got it all back and working [forgot the splash screen - but sorted this morning] including the phone connections etc..

Why am I writing all this -- a a warning to check the actual size of the down load and to see if you have the physical space for it.. for some reason Tom-Tom don't do this basic check before it starts.

I do hope that it now works OK -- but I think I will go to Halfords and get a micro 2Gb SD card -- just to be a little more secure in the future.
Is that a good idea???

Thanks to Tom-tom support in Amsterdam !!

Maurice

Yes! But a better idea would be to get a 4GB card. An even better idea would be to get a 4GB card from somewhere which doesn't charge you as many arms and legs as Halfords will. Then copy everything from your device onto the card and run it all from the card - if you have everything on the card, it will take precedence over the internal of the device and may even run a bit quicker too!

Thanks I didn't know you could get 4Gb micro cards I saw a Kingston 2 Gb for £4 but I like the idea of a 4Gb - even bigger.. have to find out the cost
Do you need a special type of format?

I will try to get one then have to work out how to transfer it all over..

Do you just transfer the maps -[Can I use explorer to do this?? ]
- as most things are in the maps -- Poi's etc

Thanks for the info

Your device can support MicroSD cards up to and including 32GB in capacity, for a few maps 4GB is more than adequate.
To transfer the files over simply copy the Western_Europe map folder from the device to the PC then from the PC to the MicroSD card - Mike

And for Gawd's sake back it all up again! Smile

Surprised you resorted to the TT help desk though...
Everything you mention - like getting rid those files you mention (they aren't actually the voices but support files for the voice command system) has been mentioned on here a lot recently since the new map release!

Another option to consider when Home decides there is inadequate space on the device is to extract the files from the new map download to a single folder on the PC, add the .meta.dct activation code from the download to the same folder and then use Windows Explorer to install the map.

Doing it this way avoids having to have loads of spare capacity on the device for the unzip to take place so its far less hassle to put the map on the device - I am only including this for information should anyone find this thread with a similar issue - Mike

as a matter of interest -- the tom-tom live 750 default screen is 3D -- is there any way of making the default screen 2D.

I know that you can touch the screen at the bottom centre and it changes -- but I just would like it to start in 2D

@Mike1 your link is for an SDHC type card in the SD form factor this type of card will not fit an x40 or x50 as they only accept MicroSD cards, Maurice try This one which will fit the x50 - Mike

Thanks -- both -Mike and Mike - Yes the 750L does need the micro size sd card and that one looks good..

I will give it a go -- nothing to lose.

Thanks..

Any ideas about the default 3D/2D screen??

So after downloading with home is it best to install with micro sd card in a card reader and point explorer to its location. I have just purchased the 750 live and am about use my free map upgrade. I have found this card which looks just right for the job with reader-http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=108148

A step by step guide would be useful for upgrading map if anybody knows any links?
John.

John, the Transcend Class 6 SDHC card your link points to will be fine with the PND you have.

You should be able to use Home to update the map, although I would recommend you perform a full back up using Windows Explorer BEFORE you do anything with the device - Mike

It's a pity that TomTom didn't stick with full size SDHC cards which are available with much faster memory. A SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s SDHC fitted to my old 520 gave a much a better response but MicroSD cards are abysmally slow in comparison
