Went on a trip to Belgium yesterday and thought to give the nuvi 350 an outing (2010.10 maps) so to make it simple just keyed in Brugge.
Now I don't expect perfection but I always travel on the ferry from Dover but all the way there even when at Dover the damn Garmin kept trying to get me on the Eurostar, it has no idea that a ferry terminal exists either at Dover or Dunkirk.
Now I have searched the poi's and tried everything I know to get it to find a ferry terminal but no luck at all, but in the avoids it has ferries so how can it avoid what it can't find.
Seriously thinking of dumping the Garmin as this is a serious omission and makes me wonder what other bits are missing from Garmin units. |

You can find ferry terminal POIs on this page under Transport - Ferry Terminals to add to your Garmin.
In cases like this it's probably better to break the journey into 2 stages. Home - Ferry. Ferry - Destination. Especially if you have a preferred route. |

Ta for the info and the link to the poi's.
But you'd think that a large ferry terminal would at least be on the mapping system with an ability to use it instead of the tunnel. |

On my nuvi255, the Ferry Terminals (including Dover East) are in the PGPSW poi's, not in the Garmin ones.
I keyed in Dover to Brugge, and the nuvi routed me via the ferry to Calais.

tornaway, My TomTom will always route me via EuroStar if I plan a trip from the Uk to the continent in one "step", so don't ditch your Garmin just yet. Even If I put Dover Ferry Port as a waypoint, it will send me back to Ashford afterwards to catch the train! As PaulB2005 says, I treat the journey as two separate journeys.

That isn't a good way to do it. You need to cut your journey into two parts. Drive to the channel crossing point of choice, then drive on to your destination. The sat nav isn't going to know which mode of transport you choose to cross the channel.

Your sat nav is set for "Fastest Route" and the Eurotunnel is the fastest way across.

Yes it does exist, but it's a bit strangely marked. Do a search for "Ground Transportation" then "Dover" and it will take you right to the docks. (The road to the docks is pretty hard to miss to be honest)
These are the waypoints I have:
Dover N51.12642 E1.32759
Dunkerque is a bit better it comes up as:
Dunkerque/Terminal Ferry N51.01952 E2.19100

Ahh, I think all sat nav units have their quirks. Have a read of the forums here - some people swear by their unit, others swear at their unit. I think it's much of a muchness between the big players.
The ferry port strangeness may be the way the Navteq maps are done. Or perhaps Garmin just don't have a concept of an over water transport. I agree that it's a bit counter intuitive to select "Ground transport" for a ferry crossing.

I just tried this on my Nuvi 205 using latest firmware but last years maps. My routing preference is set to fastest. It routes me via Dover and even displays a line to board the ferry. I am not using any third party POI files for ferries. It would appear that this problem only occurs with newer maps.

How can the sat nav be expected to "know" which channel crossing you prefer though? To be pedantic, if you set it for fastest then it should take you via the tunnel...

Valid point, I rechecked all my settings and I note that avoidances has a box for ferries. Mine is unchecked, I have a vague idea that the default is set to avoid ferries. Could this be what is happening with the other posters?

First thing I checked was the avoids and ferries was unchecked, next time I'll put it on "shortest" route and see what that brings up.
But thanks for all the feedback, funny old things these sat navs.  |

It presumably can't as they are a bit short on mind reading qualities. But it could ask you which method of channel crossing you want to use  Why should you (illogically) have to make two journeys of it, other than to overcome the shortcomings of the device? |

M8TJT, True, but even if my TT was able to offer me various different options of leaving the country I think that I would still treat it as two separate journeys. A journey from, say, London to Madrid would offer so many different ways of getting across the Channel, all but one would have to discarded, then, whichever option I chose would not give me an accurate ETA time to my port of departure (i.e. Dover), instead only giving total driving time and distance for the entire trip, so, I may be able to get to Madrid by 8pm the next day but I may have missed my ferry by 5 minutes.  . Also, using the "Dead" time during the crossing allows me to re-configure my TT to km/h and load up a completely different set of POI's to those which I use in the UK, something I would not want to do whilst in "Navigating to Madrid Mode".

I had this problem a year or so back when on holiday in France and I found a work around.
Zoom out far enough that the Channel is visible, centre the Channel and zoom in on it, you should be able to see the lines of the tunnel and the ferries.
On my Zumo, at 8 miles to the little centimeter scale I can only see the Chunnel, but if I zoom in to 5 miles per cm or closer, I can see 4 lines; the Chunnel, Dover-Boulogne, Dover-Calais and Dover-Dunkerque. Place the little routing arrow on the line you want, select it and, Hey Presto! your Garmin will happily route you to the middle of the Channel! 
Obviously if you route to Brugge first, you should be able to use the middle of the Channel as a via point. Once your Garmin knows that's the way you want to go it will take you right up to the Dock gates.
It works for me, I hope it helps you too.

Hmm, I see M8TJT's point but I'm still with AliOnHols in that I've always seen it as two journeys or a via point.
It doesn't just apply to ferries, what if you want to drive London to Birmingham. Why doesn't it ask me if I want to take the M1 or M40 (or some other route)? The answer is that you can take whatever route you want using a via point.
