Hi,

I am thinking if getting an iPhonre 3Gs for use with the ioPlay unit, which I already have for use with my TT Go 740 and Nokia N82. Has anyone tried pressing the "call hangup" button in the ioPlay for 2 seconds to activate the voice calling function on the iPhone? If so, does it work? I would like to use the iPhone's "voice commands" function to make a call using voice dialling instead of having to hold down the button on the iPhone. Can this be done?

Thanks,

J-P

p.s. I have heard that using the current TomTom app on the 3GS, if a call comes in the navigation stops and resumes automatically after ending the call. Is that so? If that's true, then perhaps I can just reject the call if I am at a difficult junction and carry on navigating straight away, then call that person back a couple of minutes later using just the ioPlay buttons and my voice?! Thanks for any advice...

If you answer a phone call while any navigation app is running the phone will dump the nav app, if the software is written correctly at the end of the phone call the Nav app will restart and continue on to the previously entered destination TomTom does this but not all nav apps re-start or continue to same destination.

I will try the voice control in the car after lunch and let you know - Mike

Thank you Mike!

So am I correct to assume that if you reject an incoming call with a nav app running, the app won't shut down? I thought that just the interruption of a call coming in would do that. So, it's only if you actually ANSWER the call?

Hopefully the OS 4.0 (perhaps to be revealed next Wednesday) will allow some kind of multitasking, such that nav apps and calls can both run at the same time! If that's true, all we'd need then would be HD Traffic and PGPSW cameras on the TomTom app for it to be "perfect" - well, in my eyes anyway.

Look forward to hearing whether the voice dialling works via the ioplay buttons. Thanks again for checking so soon...

Cheers,

J-P

A 2 second press of the red button on the iO-Play activates the voice control option on the 3GS and you can do what you want from there, certainly worked for skipping iPOD tracks back/ forward so voice dialing will be fine and it uses the iO-Play microphone for the input

(Wife now worried I might swap her 3GS for my 3G, but its too big a task to bother with moving all the software over) - Mike

Ha ha!

Thanks for your quick feedback - much appreciated. I am slowly eliminating all reasons not to get myself the 3GS. It seems that I can use it with the ioPlay kit prefectly!

Just to clarify - if I choose to reject a call when it comes in during a navigated trip, will the TT software continue running without being dumped by the iPhone?

I am hoping that a future OS upgrade (OS 4.0)might change this, but it's not a show-stopper if not because I prefer not to use my phone when driving anyway.

Many thanks.

If you reject the call the navigation application will continue with no issues at all, this applies to all Nav apps on the iPhone.

I would like to see multi tasking on the iPhone but I somehow doubt Apple will allow that, still we can live in hope - Mike

I didn't think AVRCP worked with the iPhone yet? Or is this with an adapter on the iPhone?

Getting the Voice activation of the iPhone working via Bluetooth isn't AVRCP all it does is let you skip tracks using voice control from the iO-Play, I was surprised it actually worked so I have looked further in to getting Voice Activation on my 3G device Cool - Mike

Good spot! I did try the iO PLAY control keys, and thought that very little worked.

Just bought, and had installed two more iO PLAYs. One for my new (old) car, and one for the wife's.

Anyone know what iPhone mode actually does? I'm fairly sure I didn't activate this on the previous iO PLAY, and yet it worked fine. Aside from the inevitable lack of A2DP.

Where are you seeing "iPhone Mode" displayed as thats a new one on me and the iO-Play certainly does use A2DP for music as well as supporting HFP for the phone calls, its the AVRCP that should be missing as the iPhone doesn't support this - Mike

Doh! I meant to say AVRCP.

From the iO PLAY Manual:

» (Default Mode): Any iPod with 30 pin data port. Press and
hold Left & Right button on iO PLAY for 3 seconds until you
hear 1 confirmation beep.

»» iPhone Mode: Press and hold Left & Right buttons for 3
seconds until you hear 2 confirmation beeps.

Ah yes, I heard that tip somewhere else.

Still slow though. Come on Apple, get with the programme!

(And I'm still curious as to what the difference is between the two modes)
