My Mrs. Gets ever so bored when I rush outside and tell her it's flight xxx and it's at 10,00ft etc.
Strange how they give the alt in ft and speed in kts At least the whole world hasn't gone to this strange metric convention then and have to make do with figures in brackets. |

It's a brilliant site - really interesting. I use the mobile version on my HTC Desire and tracked my Dad's recent flight to Tenerife. I took some photographs of the screen as the flight was over various locations and showed them to him on his return. He was very impressed!
Flight Track for the Android is also a good app.
Can you tell I am a plane spotter?
Regards,
Laura. _________________ TomTom 730

I use FlightRadar24 and another similar facility called Plane Finder (on my iPhone) they offer a surprising degree of accuracy. I live very close to Manchester Airport, normal arrivals pass within a few hundred metres of my back garden, so I can match up the aircraft with the data from these programs ... very sad I know! |

The trouble with this kind of thing is that it seems to concentrate on the larger airports (Heathrow & Gatwick) and neglects the smaller ones (Southampton & Bournemouth).
There is a free iPhone app for this very same thing, here, but it does show the vast majority of planes in the sky around me. _________________ Andy

I believe this is something to do with the equipment on board the aircraft. Typically the (smaller) turboprops are not equipped with the 'kit' that transmits the information which the likes of 'flightradar24' use to produce their displays. Given that the likely traffic at Southampton / Bournemouth will not be a high percentage of jets there wont be much data available. |

The aircraft needs to be fitted with an ADS-B Transponder to appear on the map "Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast" See Here for more information - Mike |

Thanks Mike, that it the piece of 'kit' I was referring to, but had forgotten it's name. If I understand things correctly anyone can buy an ADS-B receiver and monitor activity in their area (have heard of ranges of around 100 miles mentioned), sites like flight-radar then put the input from several receivers together. |

slightly gutted that no planes seem to land at Leeds Bradford according to the app...
on a clear day we can watch them land from our garden and yes, they have jets there!
still, an interesting app. it alerted me to a hijack this morning but i couldn't find any way to pull up that aircraft in the app?!
