Ok, chaps, know how it works but wondered whether it works on a date system or some other means. For example, I downloaded cameras on a Fri night and at the same time use home for updates. TT Home gives me a new GPFx file and all is good.

I connect on a Sunday night and it offers me another one. So therefore I wonder if the actual file is updated once week, every day or randomly? In other words, is there an optimum date and time download a new file?

Thanks

Andy

Must admit I thought it was every time you connect TT Home.
I'm only saying that because that's what happens to me.
Also when I boot up the TT, say the following day after a GPS fix update, it still always goes to my 'Home' even though I could be 170 miles from there - which I usually am.

To be honest i don't pay much attention to it

The gpsquickfix files are normally offered on a daily basis.

... but as each download contains information about the satellites for several days ahead (I think it's 7 days), there's no point in downloading it every day.

In fact, it's only really of any use if you don't use the TomTom very often. If you use it every day, there's probably no point in downloading the GPSQuickfix files at all.

I was just asking the specific question as to how frequently it was offered, Andy. I didn't elaborate on the usefulness of accepting a daily download. Laughing

Sorry David, although I quoted you, I was actually trying to answer the last part of mightyyid's original question:

I last downloaded it in February 2007 (about the time we decided it was a bit flakey and/or unnecessary). Can't remember which device it was for, but certainly none of the ones I have today. Home has given up on me and hasn't even offered it for a very long time.

The longest I can recall not using any device is a long weekend. Embarassed Embarassed I tell a lie - I don't use them when I'm on holiday in Corfu for two weeks. Whatever! I don't have problems getting satellite fixes.

I have found without regular updates it can take an age to get a fix.

And I use mine daily.

Are you driving off before you get a fix?

I'm intrigued, too! What actual information do the GPS-Fix files contain? Given that the sats are geostationary, presumably it's not positional information as this should only change when a particular one is retired and replaced.

When did all the GPS satelites become geostationary? This questions some fundamental principles on how they stay in certain orbits.

Nope, always start from the same place (On the drive) after say 6 days it can take up to 8 mins to get a fix, once GPS Fix update loaded less than 30 seconds.

This has been the same for all the TT's I have had.

Also I have an HTC PDA in the car (I am a mini cab driver) which is never updated GPS wise that can take up to 20 mins to get a fix.

Ooops - my mistake. And thanks to PaulB2005 for posting that link.

Well I guess you need to move house!! (but before doing that I'd try parking facing in a different direction). I have three TTs and an HTC Advantage X7510. I switch on the HTC first cos I load two programs into Win Mobile, then the TTs. Then I start "Navigate to" on the TTs whilst the HTC gets the first program going, part of which requires GPS lock. By the time I finish setting all four going, they've all acquired satellite lock and I have TomTom navigating for my departure. Very occasionally, I'll set off before getting them all going and in those circumstances they'll take up to a quarter of a mile to lock on.
