Nuvi 860 battery

Hi, my 860 has the occaisional habit of running its battery down despite being shut down correctly. Can I leave it permanently on charge with the home charger without harming it?

Hi,
I once raised the issue of the battery going flat if you don't use the sat nav for a couple of days, according to Garmin support...
when you slide the power button on the top of a Nuvi 8xx unit, this doesn't turn the unit off but puts the unit into a standby mode, much like closing the lid on a laptop.
The idea is the next time you turn the unit on it will wake up faster than if you were to turn it on completely. As the unit runs on a Linux based operating system, it would take a few minutes to boot up if you were to completely turn it off.

The solution to avoiding a flat battery is to remove it when not in use!

As to your question, sorry I don't know the answer as to whether it will shorten the battery life, however, I doubt it would be very "green" to do so. At least you know why the battery runs down while not in use.

Thanks for that, it explains why I get the odd dead battery. I'm sure I didn't have this problem with my old 660 which had a 'proper' on/off switch, but I suppose thats progress.

Progress would be 2 ways to shut the device down, 1 to save battery and 1 to allow quick start up.

The soft power down also prevents you doing a reset when you switch the device on, to do this you need to remove the battery and do the reset when you put the battery back in.
