POI download of separate CSV only gives a single POIs.zip

I dont get it.

I trying to download a bunch of POI categories as separate CSV files so I can put them in my Garmin Vista HCx, but although I have selected CSV as the download format, and selected the 'Separate files per subcategory' option, every time I do the download, all I get is a single binary (not CSV) single POIs.zip file.

When I unzip the contents, I get a single POIs file (no extension) which if I try to view in Notepad, shows binary data, not CSV.

This is repeatable.

Does anyone understand how to make this work as required?

At the bottom of the download options is a Show Link Tick Box.

Then Click Download. On the next Page, Click the Download Link.

The symptoms that you describe are signs of a corrupted download.

I had already tried that, but did as you suggested and tried the download link button again.

It gives the same bad result as before, one link to one POIs.zip file, which contains the wrong info.

I'm not sure how you think this is a corrupted download - the zip unzips fine - it just contains the wrong incomplete set of information

How many categoreies are you downlaoding?

Try reducing the number or try 1 to see if that works.

I already tried 1 subcategory, and even that doesn't work, resulting in a binary file, an not a CSV.

I wouldn't tend to call a working file a corrupt file. Corruption is when the file is broken to me. These files aren't broken, They work. They are just wrong IYSWIM. :-)

Let's not split hairs, they're trying to help.....

The POIs you select are compiled 'on the fly' when you download them.

It is *that* process that can go wrong, producing a corrupted result. OK?

The exact reasons why it sometimes goes wrong are not entirely understood, but it depends on the exact configuration of your browser (Firefox tends to work fine, Internet Explorer is a bit more flakey) and we know that selecting too many categories can cause problems and that the "show link" button can often solve the problem.

If it isn't working for you, people need a chance to come up with any other ideas.

EDIT: as an experiment, I just tried ticking every box and successfully downloaded a .zip file containing 737 individual POI categories (and their associated bitmap icons).
Also, apparently any "flakeyness" I referred to above is only on the conversion to .ov2 format for TomToms, so the .csv download should be even more trouble-free.

Before we end up going round in circles, I think we need to understand a few things about your setup and method.

Which Browser are you using?

Can you itemise the steps you take? Presumably you made sure you have the correct country selected first (if you change it you will have to Refresh the page).

You then choose the SatNav System File Type as Other(CSV)

Then you made your selection of the (sub)categories.

As an experiment I have just downloaded the entire POI database (all 737 individual subcategories in one go) with no problems at all. That's a 4.2MB zip file. I'm using FF 3.5.3

Can you tell us which files you are downloading, then we can do the same and see what happens.
Maybe those files can be checked on the database if others get corrupt downloads as well.

Edit.

Using FF3.5.3 on a Mac.

Picked 5 banks at random and downloaded as separate csv files, in 1 folder.

I just tried this again, this time using Firefox instead of IE8, and this has worked correctly.

So perhaps IE8 has a compatibility issue with the POI facility.

That might do it.

Personally, across a lot of different machines I use, I find IE8 has no more problems than any of the other browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari...

It failed repeatedly for me in IE8

But after reading this thread I tried in FF 3.5.5 and it worked just as it should.
