As title suggests, after the road widening scheme is finished, the cameras will become variable speed cameras!

Thats less than 0,008% of all the cars using the road based on their own figures, it equates to one offence every couple of hours so its hardly a major need for the cameras, what ever happened to accident black spot being used to consider a location as suitable for a camera?

Will be interesting to see if the SPECS units remain or if they are replaced with the more conventional GATSO style units employed for variable speed limits - Mike

Just about 9 offences a day. If each was £60 a pop, that's £305,000, but take away all the foreign plates which don't pay up. How much does it cost to buy, install and maintain (including all the moving and relocating they've done up there) that many cameras? Do you reckon they covered their costs?

On the other hand, maybe the cameras did exactly what they were supposed to do and slowed traffic through the roadworks so that workers there didn't get killed - certainly looks that way if only 9 drivers out of 131,000 broke the 50mph speed limit (they were probably SoftypantsSoutherners not familiar with ooop 'aaaaaaaard North).

But the original question is super valid. Where's the statistics to demonstrate that, when the roadworks to IMPROVE the road are complete, it will be such a dangerous area as to necessitate speed controls? Where's the statistics to demonstrate that, when the roadworks to WIDEN the road are complete, there will be so much congestion as to require traffic flow speed control? Or maybe they realise that once they've widened that stretch, the resulting narrowing at both ends of it will cause traffic congestion which will require speed controls? Somebody, somewhere hasn't got his mind in gear! Or maybe he's the guy who's got himself lined up for the job of playing Fat Controller at a fancy console somewhere?

Very valid points Dennis, Perhaps you should direct them to Ch Insp Andy Charlton.
Te whole issue raises various questions.
a) Why are they widening M1, presumably for safety, then why install cameras before knowing the results of the roadworks
b) then why spend millions on roadworks when cameras are apparently doing the job.

There are GATSO markings painted on the carriageway adjacent to some gantries but no cameras installed on them - yet.
