I think a move like this means the OS is unlikely to be privatised as it would be worth less money - unless the bill doesn't go through of course. Could this be a ploy to get votes in the election run up with no real substance?

Regarding the point that this could bring down the price of Satmap maps - how much of, say, a £60 county 1:25K map is paid as a royalty to the O.S.? Is the O.S. fee hyped up as a way to justify prices? When Satmap do half price special offers, I doubt the OS take a smaller fee, so how much would a reduced fee to the OS actually bring down the price of Satmap maps?

That is something I think we'd all love to know. It's not that easy to compare the pricing across the various solutions offering OS maps owing to the different ways in which maps are sold (tiles, counties, custom tiles etc) but using the Snowdonia NP as an example:

Snowdonia 1:25k:
  • Memory-Map £97.87
  • SatMap £99.99 (only available as Premium which inc 1:50k map)
  • Routebuddy £49.99 (digital download)

Discounting the various features of each solution there is a huge variation in price for the same basic data. Even allowing for the savings where digital downloads are offered, a 50% saving suggests there is a large margin in some products?
