im in the market for a new tom tom unit
my current one comes via a 02 xda11i and as served me well for a number of years. however it is now starting to fail me. it is problems with the charger. ive tried different ones but sometimes it will stop charging then it will switch its self off . so think its about time i splashed out
one problem what do i go for, so much choice.
would like wide screen, lane guidance , not bothered about euro maps (maybe in the future) some sort of traffic delay warning would be nice. is there any without subscription ? dont use it enough to justify paying for it
notice ebuyer got some good deals at the moment and free postage.

The TomTom XL is a good basic widescreen unit without too many bells and whistles you don't really need like bluetooth hands-free or FM transmitter.
It's available as an all- Europe or as a UK and Ireland-only version.
It has lane guidance on major roads and many in-city roads too.

It's compatible with the RDS-TMC traffic antenna which once you've bought it is free to use. However there have been issues with reception quality in this country, so a TomTom Go model with the LIVE services including "HD-Traffic" is a better bet if that aspect *is* important to you.

From your requirements I would look at the XXL, XL IQ, XL LIVE IQ or a GO530 as these are available at reasonable prices.

You will need a USB RDS-TMC antenna for all except the XL LIVE IQ which is a subscription after the initial trial period.

I have tried all the different Traffic options TT have devised and HD Traffic is by far the best, but still not perfect. The Google search facility that comes with the HD Traffic subscription is very good though, it finds almost anything you need to Navigate to if you don't know the area and don't have a postcode to navigate to.

If you get one with an SD card slot you can add a card and load the European maps at a later date, if you go with the more recent devices then they only have built in storage with no expansion slot so you cannot add memory to these units. If you go for the more recent devices without the memory card slot then get it with the European maps installed from day 01.
I would also consider the TomTom 520 on offer from CPC at £125 see Here as once you update (all for free using LMG) it will be a very capable performer, even if you don't need the bells and whistles of Bluetooth, FM, mp3 its well worth it for the Text To Speech for reading out road names etc, it is widescreen and you can fit the optional accessory RDS-TMC for traffic information (if you really must) - Mike

just looking at the 520 now. looks nice but doesn't appear to have iq routes or lane guidance. so looks like its the tom tom one or xl and get the euro maps as well
is it just the screen size that is the difference between them

Once you update the 520 with the latest Navcore software which is free followed by the map upgrade using LMG the 520 will have reality view, lane assist, IQ Routes 2 - Out of the devices you are listing this is a far more capable device for no extra cost and it can be upgraded to European mapping as it has that all important memory card slot.
The othe devices have enough spare memory for POI files and voice warnings etc but a UK regional unit will not have sufficiant storage capacity for European maps - Mike

I purchased my brand new TT GO 520 from CPC online Saturday morning 25th October for £124.95, it was delivered for free by UPS trackable courier on Monday afternoon 27th October I have already updated it to the latest operating version of Navcore 8.351.

If I now wait until around 20th November there is a very good chance of getting a newer version of Navcore and the very latest map by using the latest map guarantee that comes with the device. This gives me the equivalent of a 530 all uptodate and for a similar price you are looking at for a more basic unit.

Yes there is a bit of work to do getting the updates as you have to 1st download and install an intermediate one before the 8.351 version can be downloaded, but just so long as you take Windows backups before each stage there is almost nothing to go wrong (Fingers crossed touch wood and anything else you can think of) for the anoraks among us its also quite good entertainment.

I have a CPC account (not credit, just Visa) and I'm not trading as anybody.

Although I must have put my name in a few boxes at some point as every package comes with my name THREE TIMES on the address label. Wink

CPC probably do more business with companies than Joe Public so thats why they have Company Name but I just put my name there and everything was OK just paid by Mastercard

They also have a trade counter that is open to the public, handy for me its in Preston very close to the M55/ M6 junction which I use quite often. Never needed an account with them as I purchase straight from the counter as it avoids postage cost and is quicker (depending upon where you live) - Mike

I'm thinking of getting a newer TT as my faithful TT One v2 keeps on locking up, I've tried numerous resets (even though my reset button doesn't work) and used the ClearFlash tool on it many times...

I've even formatted the damn thing back to a basic unit and started over again..

I'd like a TT that has the Europe Map, IQ Routes, Lane Guidance and ideally Text 2 Speak.

Not too worried about the Bluetooth as I have a Bluetooth Radio in the car...

Would I be better of going for a 520 or one of the Newer TomTom XL's?
