New Garmin 1690 and 1860

Many may already be aware of Garmin's launch of the 1690 "live" model, shipping in September according to reports. It heavily relies on MSN services and of course includes Google Local. Well it seems Garmin has been hiding another new model, and it's really connected! The 1860 will ship with a full web-browser, e-mail, internet radio and video streaming, and a whole lot of other potential. You'll need to set up a wi-fi connection to make use of this tho. For some reason they've thrown in a geo-tagged camera, tho a similar camera on the the new Garmin Oregon 400T is actually pretty useful, not just a simple point and shoot. No firm prices announced, but I wouldn't expect them to come cheap, with the 1690 reportedly close to $500. For that price, here's hoping the live services are free, at least for a year.

Looks like Garmin's live services, dubbed nuInfo, will be free for two years. If so, then it comes out of the gate as a very worthy competitor to TomTom's live devices. If they include Navteq's Traffic Patterns, similar to but not quite as complete as TT's IQR2, then it may be a much better overall connected pnd. The live services confirmed so far is much more complete than TomTom currently offers.

But who has wi-fi in the car? It sounds like a solution looking for a problem.

My Nokia N95 has wifi, and with an app like joiku spot (spelling) you can set it up as a wifi hotspot. it works a treat, and there is a free version you can test it with (stops free email and some other websites from working through it, but still good).

I like the fact that I can have one dataplan but still us multiple devices.

Since Garmin has now officially announced the 1690, the offered services are pretty well set. In addition to the common fuel prices, weather, traffic and Google Local Search, Garmin will be including some features new to connected (live) pnd's. Beacon Buddy and Ciao, two social networking services, White Page lookup so that even residential addresses can be found and navigated to by using either a known phone number or name, reverse lookup on White Pages, quick search for POI's, and airline flight status. It will ship with one year's live services included with the purchase and also allows cross-continent roaming so you're not locked to use in a specific country. Garmin nüLink! services are currently available for Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. I haven't seen announced pricing yet, but I expect it to be about 300-325 euros. Unconfirmed availability in October.

These 'live' services seem pretty useless in the UK.

In what way? They're basically the TomTom live services plus a couple of extras as far as I can tell.

Because they seem to rely on the MSN services stuff which we don't have.

This looks to be a great device, but seriously crippled over here Sad

I guess we'll have to wait and see if the European services are different from what will be offered in North America. AFAIK, Garmin lists the same for both continents.

For European connectivity on the 1690, Garmin will be using the KPN network, using some Jasper software. It's a multi-year contract so unlikely to change anytime soon.
