So far I've only seen problems reported.

Lack of space in the device
Outdated map detail
Strange route planning
Loss of favs, sounds etc...

Seems a lot of messing about to get thing working.

Did anyone have an incident free update?

It's the nature of fora that only people with problems usually post. There must be thousands of users who've had none. If you have an explorer backup (or the Mac equivalent) you could always revert if you have a problem until someone helps you sort it out on the forum.

Most of the problems reported seem to be easily curable when you have access to someone who knows the answers.

Thanks for the reply.
In that case, is there a FAQ or similar, that shows 'best practise' action to do before attempting an update?
Along the lines of:-

Back it up - clearly!
Save xx files remotely
You neeed xx space before applying the upgrade.

Given the débâcle with the new maps on my 740 (endless reboot loop, loss of HD Traffic, etc), I'm glad I had a backup I could easily revert to, as I'm not confident in TomTom straightening up the mess they've created any time soon.

In fairness, it's the first time I've had problems with new maps or HD services.

Well, mine updated OK.

Except for the loss of POI warnings that I had set up.

I had saved the MapSettings.cfg file before the update, so it was a quick fix by copying back the file.

Assume someone has UK and ROI only, how many roads are there and what percentage of roads do they actually use and what's the odds of them coming across one of the changes? If a lorry, coach or delivery driver, or a rep, then the chances are it would be fairly soon but for occasional use the odds must be low. Until I went down the sat nav road I had a 1994 French map which did the job and I never came across any real problems.

Talking of France, if someone has Western Europe and UK and 25% of the roads change, what percentage would be for the UK and of those which would they come across?

The teleatlas maps I have are last years and still junction 2 of the M2 is totally wrong, as they were in my previous maps. (Navteq have it right so hopefully it will be worth upgrading as I believe iGO are now using these maps).

It appears to me, reading the posts, that most errors are found within a few miles of peoples homes, that being the case the maps are far from perfect and as our trusty sat navs re-route if we go wrong, I can't see the point of upgrading at every new map issue.

Have you checked out mikealder's FAQs HERE?

As for needing space, I've never had a problem because the new map has simply overwritten the old one.

Some devices are running out of space though, spare a thought for GPS users in North America with the later XL devices, the v835 map is too large to fit on the device if the application and a voice file is installed (bare bones minimum needed for it to operate).
The same problem was encountered with the v830 map release, the XL only has internal memory available for storage so it cannot be suplemented with a storage card. With the maps growing in size with each update its only a matter of time before before we get hit with similar issues in Europe on the devices without expandable storage - Mike
