Not sure if anyone (or everyone) knew this already, but I have in the last week learnt an important and infuriating lesson about tom tom map upgrades. I've been selling Tom tom sat nav units for many years now and as far as I was aware there were two levels of mapping data for European maps; major roads and full road mapping.

I purchased the full road maps for my ageing Tom tom go instead of upgrading my unit (it still worked fine, so I saw little need to make it landfill just yet) I naively assumed I was getting the same map data as the new machines had.

I have learnt however that the map data is not complete. Infuriatingly the roads on which our Villa are located are not on the updates I paid £40 pounds for. I have been and had a look on the new units and the roads I need are all there.

I have installed all map updates and have been in discussion with Tom tom customer 'support' for the past week, which I have found truly appalling. I am unlikely to either recommend or purchase anything made by Tom tom again, based on the way they have dealt with this problem. All of these roads are on google maps and multimap, so I naively assumed they'd be on 'paid for' versions.

Here is a screen shot of my Tom tom with the latest FULL European maps.

Here is a photo of the same spot on the new Tom tom's. (apologies for the quality, I took it on my phone in a shop).

Not sure if this is common knowledge in these parts, but (as a reseller) it's news to me and everyone I worked with.

If anyone is considering upgrading their machines or maps, this information may be of use.
I certainly wish I knew this before I parted with my money.

What map version number did tomtom supply?

You can find this by tapping the lower right hand corner of the main screen then tap where it says version towards the bottom right hand corner. You should get a display that says in the middle of the screen

Map: "Europe vxxx.xxxx"

Its the numbers after the v that indicates the version number.

Somethings not right somewhere?

Even v6.75 maps' show a better coverage of the top photo.
They have roads to the left of the ]x_ bit.

Do you have a Uk and Major EU roads map?

7.903 is the application version. This is the latest version for the original GO so that's a good sign.

What we need is the map version which will be something like 803.1234 its shown in the middle of the green screen as the example here.

No I have Western Europe. Described on Tom tom's website as 99.9% coverage in Spain, Uk, France, etc.

Definitely not Major roads, hence the reason why I'm so annoyed.

Ok, you have the latest version of the application and the latest version of the map and you must have selected the correct map as it shows up on that green screen on your device.

Unfortunately I don't have European mapping on my device so I am not able to offer much help. It might help others to assist you if you could post details of the location where the problem occurs.

Welcome to the forum, by the way, sorry I didn't notice earlier that this was your first post.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I joined just to highlight this issue, as it would appear that its news to many. Not only to my work colleagues (we sell Tom tom's, Garmin, etc) but also experienced users and CUSTOMERS!! The missing roads are located just outside Nerja in Spain. Searching for Nerja will bring up the above screens.

Tom tom have fobbed me off by saying I have the complete maps, but the maps aren't 100% because of data supplied by TeleAtlas (so tough). However, as you can see quite clearly, I've been given the brush off as the truth is, they're selling 'scaled down' versions of their maps for older machines. They DO have the map data!! I can see it on their new machines! Which IMHO simply isn't made clear enough and should be publicised as much as possible. Not to damage TT's reputation, just so that customers can make informed decisions!

Up until last week I was a Tom tom advocate and had I known the above, I probably would have put the 40 quid towards a new machine or waited for the iphone app.

If however someone can help me resolve this issue and get the roads on (you have 24 hours) I'm all ears!

Otherwise I'm thinking trading standards and small claims court to try and get my money back.

The bottom screen shot looks like a v8.30 map, expect its the 2GB version.

I see from your screen shot yours is a 1GB.
This would have very minor roads omitted for space saving.

Often, one of the "features" lost on the smaller maps is "minor roads". However, I would not have expected so much to be lost. Unfortunately, this is why they say it only covers 99.9%.

However, even on my 2Gb version of "Western & Central Europe", all the minor roads around Nerja, Spain are shown as on your shop photo.

As the description made in the tom tom app, 'map upgrades' is the same blurb (99.9%) I assumed (like many hundred's of other customers have) that all of the same roads that are on the normal version would be available in this version (incidentally the other version was never made available to me as an upgrade... and still isn't, I had no idea it was 2gb!!).

I simply thought they'd reduced the footprint in the same way Apple have got Leopard down from 12gb to 6gb in their latest Snow leopard upgrade. Maybe the roads would have less detail? I didn't know, didn't question it, but never thought I was being sold a watered down version.

Now I know better and I hope other people will learn from my holiday cock up!

I guess you're right, this (I believe) is the information I should have had before I made my purchase decision and something Tom tom seem reluctant to admit.

Yes you are right. Most people seem to be unaware that there are several 'flavours' of maps, all with the same base version number ie v830.xxxx where xxxx is the variant of map data based on the major release of v830.

There is the 'full' version of the maps, designed for devices such as the GO 9x0 series which has the largest amount of onboard memory.

The 2gb version is for slightly smaller equipped devices such as the GO 5x0 and 7x0 series.

Then the 1gb versions for the further reduced memory devices.

I'm sure theres someone out there who knows more details than myself. But thats the general 'jist' of how it works just now!

Of course the crazy thing about this is that the storage on the initial tom tom was but a mere 128Mb! So an upgraded memory card would be required for any map purchase? 2gb is supported (although I appreciate the extra demands this would make on, I guess a slower processor than new machines) so perhaps the map upgrades would be available if a 2gb card is inserted? Even so, why am I guessing all of this now?

I've thrown a 2gb card in and am reinstalling the old map, I'm sure with Tom tom's amazing devotion to customer care and value for money, once the tom tom home app realises I have 2gb of storage it will offer me the 2gb version as an optional free upgrade!

Hahahahhaah, I am prepared to eat my hat and have a double helping of humble PIE if the latter is true. If its not, then this needs highlighting with Tom tom's customers AT POINT OF PURCHASE!
