There were 57 million units sold worldwide in 2008 and 77 million unit sales are expected in 2009. However, the rise in this sector does come at a cost to the sales of traditional dedicated satnav devices.
Improved mobile navigation services and the presence of mapping applications available from major vendors such as Apple, Blackberry and Nokia are increasingly stimulating the GPS smartphone sector.
Strategy Analytics report that handsets with GPS reached 15% of all shipments worldwide last year and expect that figure to reach 21% by the end of 2009. _________________ Robert Brady

New users of Mobile telephones used as Sat Nav devices should be aware of my experience. I bought an expensive O2 XdaIIs a few years ago which I use with TomTom Navigator 6, a Bluetooth GPS receiver that transmits to the mobile telephone in my car.
TomTom have introduced Navigator 7 with updated maps. Navigator 7 will not work on my XdaIIs. So I cannot download the latest maps.
