I'm about to build a small brick wall and have received various opinions from people as to the best way to set about it. The main disagreement is about the 'frogs' and whether they should be face up or face down.
I would like some opinions from amateurs and professionals alike, who taught them, how long ago and the reasons why 'their' way is better.
Thank you all in advance. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

I believe that frog up is the correct way. But frog down uses less pug, useful if you are mixing the muck by hand. . |

Frog up is the correct way. As M8TJT says, it does use more mortar and that is the reason, the wall becomes much stronger as a result. However, as a small DIY garden project, it shouldn't make any real difference unless you are building a retaining wall for a raised bed or a wall for an above ground water feature or the wall is above 1m high. You can lay the top course up-side-down so that rainwater does not collect in the frogs. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

You could use concrete blocks with no frog or the bricks with three holes through them, these avoid all the confusion. _________________ Paul |

I had thought of that but none of the colours come close. All the existing brickwork has Tudor bricks.
I'd also considered fancy brickwork, some nice stuff at B&Q, but my superior better half made my mind up for me.

I never got any new frogs these last two years (so I haven't voted). Do Koi carp eat tadpoles - I had loads this year. How could I stop them getting et next year? _________________ Dennis

They eat frog tadpoles but not toad tadpoles. But in direct answer to your question and before anyone else gets it in. Kill the Koi. That's sure to work |

Should this be allowed?
We might have the Koi Lovers' Society writing in
PS which is better - hand battered Koi, beer battered Koi or, perhaps, smoked Koi? _________________ Andy

yeah, well I'm a Koi lover of sorts - I've brought them up from small to enormous and the nine I bought for about a fiver each are all probably worth at least fifty quid each now. I fear taddies come rather further down the list of protected species. _________________ Dennis

The frog is up. Only the top layer may be frog down for cosmetic reasons. There are no exceptions weather you think its ok or not, simply because I say so and because I will bring on the entire building industry if you don't.
Cardinal sin of bricklayers!
Top tip: wet each brick in a bucket of water for better adhesion to the mortar except on soft, sandy bricks!
Have fun! _________________ Dom

Find yourself a nice local builders merchant like mine where you should find all the nice bricks you want and all the advice you can get.
Put in 'builders merchant' and your locality into google and bingo.
nice stuff an B&Q indeed. _________________ Dom
