Active 10 compass performance

Does anyone else have difficulty keeping the map still when using the electronic compass to orientate the map "ahead up"? I've tried changing the trigger speed for switching between using gps and compass for direction, I've eliminated nearby metal objects and power lines (by moving away from them!), -I've even removed my watch, keys and mobile phone from my pockets - and I just can't stop the map from jumping around.
Anyone who has seen the stunning performance of the compass in the new iPhone 3GS will know what is possible with the latest direction-finding technology. Are the problems I'm experiencing with my A10 a limitation of the hardware used, or the software?

I've got to say that I am disappointed with the performance of the compass too, I thought I was doing something wrong at first, but now just accept that it's not very good.

I can never get it calibrated to within any better than about 15-30 degrees either, utterly useless for taking any reference when stationary. I carry my old Silva and rotate my A10 to suit ;)
