Did a search tonight, couldn't quite find the answers I was looking for so here goes. As you can probably tell from the subject line I'm losing signal when I shouldn't be. Sometimes after installing the latest gps quickfix its fine, after installing it the next time its available it goes to pot after a couple of days. Should I only install the latest quickfix if it starts playing up? If this is the case then tomtom should be a bit more helpful by saying something like (only install this update if your unit is having difficulty picking up and keeping a signal)! The old adage 'if its not broken leave it alone' comes to mind _________________ Graham

If the quickfix causing the problem then don't do the update. Mikealder posted recently saying that he hadn't let it update in 18 months. I think that you might notice a short delay when you switch on and it tries to get the first fix. Presumably this delay will increase the longer it is since it last had a signal. _________________ Jock

I'm going to try and see if it starts working ok, I have updated it tonight (I had to - it was diabolical today) So if it starts behaving again I'm going to leave it and see how it goes. _________________ Graham

What type of vehicle are you driving ?
If you are in a van or a vehicle with a near vertical windscreen it can give poor reception.
Maybe your answer would be to buy an external antenna |

Hi crazyhazy
I long ago came to the conclusion that some devices are better than others at getting a fix. Mine is brilliant. I only use ‘Home’ to download a new navcore or map and never use it for anything else.
Sometimes getting the fix may take me a minute, sometimes longer and sometimes it takes just a few seconds. However on average it has got a fix before I have finished entering my journey details.
Its best fix ever was on a trip to France. I had not used the device for a month and only switched the device on when the Ferry had docked. The bow doors opened, I switched the Tomtom on and as we drove up the ramp I noticed that we had a fix and all five bars were showing. I was gob smacked. But, it once took me thirty minutes to get a fix. Why? I haven’t a clue. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Doesnt matter what I'm driving to be honest, when its working I get full strength signal indoors, never mind in a Transit van!! Seems to be ok at the moment, as I said previously - if it carries on working then stuff the gpsquickfix in future _________________ Graham

Last time I downloaded QuickGPSFix was February 2008. On the rare occasions when I plug into Home to look for updates, I always deselect it. _________________ Dennis
