What is the optimum warning distance to set on my ICN 520, especially mobile speed cameras file.

I don't have a Navman, so I don't know the device's capabilities.

If you can set distance for different speeds, we often say (roughly) that 10 times the speed gives 10 seconds warning. 300 yards gives 10 seconds at 30mph, 700 yards gives 10 seconds at 70mph.

10 seconds is perhaps OK for fixed cameras, but for mobiles we suggest doubling it - probably 10 seconds is well inside its view range.

To some extent it depends on your driving style - the above distances are for travel at the speed indicated. If you habitually drive at 50mph in a 30mph zone, you need 500 yards warning to get 10 seconds advance (and you also need a damned great smack!).

We have a chart somewhere with varying distances to give varying times - But can I find it??? Evil or Very Mad

Be aware the distances given for each give you a warning for the speed of the camera. e.g. The ten second warning will give you a warning x yards from the camera. Supposing you are travelling at 60 in a 60 limit you will get the warning at 293 yards, which is fine when travelling at or below the limit but if you are travelling at a higher speed it could be too late to slow down. When I had TT I set my 10 sec warning distance one higher than that shown in the chart and rounded up.

20 - 150 yards
30 - 195
40 - 245
50 - 295
60 - 345
70 - 395

With these distances you get a warning and, if travelling at up to 10mph over the limit, get an additional 50 yards in which to slow down.

For mobiles, which can nab you at 800 yards, it's a personal choice.

My humble apologies!!Embarassed Not being able to find the chart I was going by memory - when I'm seventy, I'll be good at it, but until then, Alzheimers and Dementia made me get it wrong!

I should have said 10 times the speed gives 20 seconds warning....

30mph - 300 yards = 20 seconds warning.
60mph - 600 yards = 20 seconds warning.

And as Lost_Property says, it's the camera speed which determines how much warning you get - 300 yards for a 30mph camera warns you at that distance, which equates to about 20 seconds driving at 30mph - if you're driving at 60, the 20 seconds is out the window!

With much more for mobiles, which are looking over the horizon for you.
