Hi, I have seen a number of threads regarding the numbers of Categories that can be downloaded to a TomTom 520, but I'm not sure if I understand it quite correctly.
I believe that the maximum number of Categories for a 520 running 8.3x Navcore has a maximum of around 169 categories permitted. Does that mean that only 169 Categories can be downloaded to the device or that only 169 Categories can be Displayed at any one time?
If I want to use all the different Fuel POIs, plus the Bank POIs and a particular Hotel Chain POIs, that gets pretty near the maximum, but if i only display the Banks and the Fuel, it's under the limit. Is that thinking correct or am I way off beam? _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course!

You can add as many category files to the map folder as you like, but the TT will only take 169 of those to show you in the list on-screen. It seems to choose them quasi-randomly too, it isn't the first 169 you added or anything sensible like that.
So the simple answer is: it is 169 available, NOT displayed.
However, showing anything like that many at once will slow down the map an awful lot.
Most people would COMBINE all the categories of a certain type (in 'Fuel' for example). Do you really need to know if it is a Jet or a Texaco station?
Similarly with Banks - if you only want a cash machine, do you need to know WHICH bank it is?
You can do that when you download the files from this site, or you can use programs such as POI Edit, to combine them after downloading from elsewhere.
As an example, I have a single category "DIY shops" with Homebase,B+Q,Wickes, Halfords etc in it, and another one for "Elec. shops" with Curries, PC World, Comet, Maplins etc.
When you want to search for one to travel too, they still all appear in the list with their individual names, they just have to share the same icon on-screen.

Cheers, Andy,
It's much as I thought and I had noticed that if everything was displayed, the map transitions slowed down.
Will do a bit more combining from now on! _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course!
