my i3 has just developed a problem in that everytime i try to upload anything to it the power cuts out also does this when i try to start to navigate to go anywhere
all i have done that may have caused a problem was to upload an updated poi file
i have tried it connected to my pc to erase all the poi but it just powers off as soon as the 2 try to speak to each other. this is the same if i try to reinstall the latest software version
i have tried resetting the unit but it still does the same thing so can anyone think of anything else i can try |

This sounds like the i3's usb socket has become detached from the circuit board.
One test is remove the 2 x AA batteries from the unit, then plug in the usb lead so as to power it from either the car charger or pc. If you VERY gently wiggle the plug does the unit keep turning off and on. If it does then the socket has detached from the circuit board. It is possible to re-solder it. BUT, it depends on how much damage there is on the circuit board when it came off. I have 2 i3's and have had to repair one of them due to that problem. I got my replacement socket off flea-bay.
Note. As original, the socket connectors are NOT soldered to the circuit board, they just rest on the circuit board, and the main frame of the socket IS soldered to the board, this holds the connectors firm on the board making the connection as they are very slightly sprung like a leaf spring.
The first most difficult thing is to open the i3 without marking the case.
The socket is shown bottom right, and is soldered to the board by the 4 pads of the socket case.
See HERE as well. |

thanks for the reply but i dont think its the socket because there is virtually no movement where the usb cable plugs in
i can leave it plugged into my pc for ages and it doesnt go off
it only goes off as soon as i try to access it with either web updater or POI loader
i found another post on here about deleting a GPI file from the card as from reading the post it sounded like he had the same problem
this hasnt worked either so i am wondering if it is
time to buy a newer model me thinx |

Have you tried both types of reset.
Note: This will remove any Favourites on the i3 and Recent destinations.
Hold down both the left button and centre wheel then press and hold the on button. Say yes to the Clear all user data. Let it reboot, reset the unit as requested.
Turn it off, then hold down the Left button and then press the Right button at the same time. Let it show that RAM, ROM and ASIC all have Pass by them. Now press the Left button once. On the next screen, Vbattery etc,
press the Left button once, Right button once, Scroll UP, Scroll Down, then press the scroll wheel once.
Press the wheel again, scroll down to Stacks, then press the wheel again, goto Reset Stored Stacks, press the wheel once, then the Left button, now scroll down to Non-Vol Info, press the wheel button once, then on Clear Non-Vol Memory, press the wheel again. The i3 will turn off and auto reboot, reset the unit as requested.
Now see if that works okay or not |

Hi, Not an expert at this by any means, but could it be you've downloaded too many POI categories? (There's a warning on this site somewhere). I downloaded too many and my i3 would not boot. Luckily had a back up and once deleted the downloaded ones I reinstalled earlier POIs problem was resolved. You can still install lots of POIs on the i3, just not in lots of categories. Hope this helps. |
