Can someone please remind me the economics of updating TomTom maps. I have a TT940 (with USA and Europe maps) which I bought in February. I am going to the States at the end of August, but am not convinced I need the latest maps for a one-off trip. I have an £8 TT voucher to use by tomorrow and was thinking of upgrading my Western Europe map anyway. However, does it pay to buy the map subscription service or buy one-off maps from time to time, I've never really got my head round this.

I subscribed to the map update service as it was £70 for 1 new map or £40 for 4, as far as i could see........ Confused

After paying £40 for a year i should have the latest map when it runs out. Unless prices dramatically drop in a years time to jump from the current map to the newest one would cost £70....

Problem is, as far as I remember, you have to buy the latest map before you can subscribe.

True and as i had the latest map it made sense for me to do it, unless i have really misunderstood things...

However if you have an old map then yes it's more expensive to catch up but moving forwards it's cheaper....

Ah! I'd not realised that before. So if you subscribe with an old map you get a discount on the "catch-up" map?

You can use the £8 voucher for the 24 month voucher from the TomTom website but not to get the 12 month one from within TomTom Home.

But then you also pay about £6 postage so really save about 2 quid!!!

Total cost for 24 months is just under £70.

cheers

Does seem a bit odd to me that on the email £8 voucher which prompted me to do this upgrade in the first place it says "hint - there are new maps" and then maps are excluded form the offer.
Also, out of interest I thought I would see how much a USA upgrade would be, but when I click on the "get a personal quote for your map" it doesn't offer me the option of a USA map - and yes, I have selected USA as my current map on the TT. I can go to the on line store and buy it at full retail, but I can't see a discounted upgrade. Does this mechanism only apply to European maps ?
