Cambridgeshire SafetyCam Partnership goes blue

This item caught my attention this week.

Cambridgeshire SafetyCam Partnership have treated themselves to some new SpeedCam Vans. I can imagine that they must have a very hard life travelling to the local haunts then parking up for a few hours. Very hard on the coffee cup holders and the seat recline mechanisms.

Still you have to balance the books and spend some of the cash generated somehow. It keeps the boys in the traffic garage busy and gives the Transport manager a chance to support our vehicle manufacturers.

But strangely, the partnership has changed the colour of the vans to dark blue. Apparently the previous dayglo yellow vans were occasionally mistaken for work vans. Naturally it makes complete sense to have them painted dark blue then so they will be mistake for anything but a SpeedCam van. And they are larger (uh why?) and they have camera logos on the side, just where you won't see them as you approach from the rear.

Perhaps the next upgrade should have have a side hatch and cooker then they could serve sausage rolls to passing motorists.

Also the dark red "Police" lettering on the back of the van won't stand out very well on a dark blue background.

How dare you belittle my counties force, they deserve the best, for their job is an ardous one, of dedication, long hours and high pressure.

It takes a special breed to be one of Cambridgeshires finsest upholders of the law, especially in speed enforcement.

As such they deserve the comfort of such a spacious vehicle to enable them to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities, without unnessecary stress.

A larger vehicle will allow the fitting of kit, providing for operator comfort and not fall foul of the health and safety rules.

The new van size will faciliate the addition of :
1. a recliner chair, which will double as a bed when fatigue sets in from exceeding his hours of watching the video screens thereby providing proper relaxation
2. a new and aircondition unit to reduce discomfort on summer days.
3. a fridge to keep his food fresh and drinks cool
4. a sink to wash his utensils
5. a watercooler
6. a small cooker and stove (no microwave allowed, as it may interfere with sensitive recording equipment) to allow for warm food on colder days.
7. A dedicated iPod/Mp3 point in arm of chair.

The above will provide for a highly motivated and alert collector of revenue for the Cambridgeshire force and the expense of new vehicles will probably be recovered within a month of being first used.

Just a thought. Do the vans have to carry a cert/calibration or what ever for the camera. And does it have to be made available to the public if they ask the camera operator to see it.

If so perhaps we should all pull up and ask to see it

You forgot the therapist's couch so that they can receive on the spot councilling to overcome the guilt derived trauma of fining all those motorists thay catch.

Given forces in other countries seem perfectly able to operate mobile cameras from standard cars or small people carriers you have to wonder why some forces think a camera and operator requires a ruddy great long wheelbase van.

Handy at weekends though for anyone who needs to move a settee or do a tip run

Just be thankful they haven't thought about having a man walking in front of every one of these noisy, dirty, smelly, dangerous, horseless carriages instead. It could be worse.

I guess that when a hi-vis 'safety camera' van gets a coat of dark blue paint it then becomes lo-vis 'revenue raiser' van. Next move will be to cover them with camouflage netting.

we have a mobile speed camera van that waits in Horspath every monday morning in rush hour, i always cycle past him and say morning Mr Jobsworth, how much money are you raising for your Xmas ball this year?

How remiss of me, I forgot about the therapist and the special sound system to pipe soft gentle and soothing whale song to calm the poor opreators nerves, so easing his conscience on revenue generation.

Also, one must not forget the pressure the operator will be under, to make sure he arrives at his alloted spot on time and stays untill his time allocation has ended.

The strain and anxiousness of the potential written warning from the Chief Constable at failing to ensure adequate daily revenue targets are met during his shift, must be catered for and offset in opreator comfort.

As for the colour, did you not realise, a blue van matches the nice new polo-shirts they all now wear as part of their uniform.

I don't get why the authors of this site seems to biassed against camera vans, and yet doesn't seem at all biassed against bait cars even thought they're both designed to catch criminals. If you don't drive illegally you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
