Whilst it does seem strange to have to make space for the newer map it is larger than the map folder supplied and the device / Home seems to need some extra space to decompress the download.
The advice "wigfield" offered is spot on and is the same I gave a work mate only two days ago who was in the same position, once the update is performed simply copy the folders back to the device.

If you want to use the mp3 player capability consider a larger capacity SDH storage card, the 720 running the latest application will work with cards up to and including 32GB although the 8GB and 16GB are considerably more cost effective and can store hours of music as well as your map folders. The larger memory card gets around the issue of storage space and is well worth considering - Mike

Total PDA are now saying that they are on their final stock of refurbished 720s. I bought one today, backed up using Windows Explorer, updated the application (twice) using TomTom Home, and am currently downloading the latest Europe map using LMG.
Mine is indistinguishable from new
