pocketgpsworld.comiOSMaps is an iPhone application that allows you to view Ordnance Survey Maps at 1:50k and 1:10k scales.

Using the iPhone Core Locations feature it can access a map of your immediate area or you can search using PostCode, place name and even OSGB36 and WGS84 grid references.

The 1:10k map scale is very impressive with individual building outlines and other rich detail whereas the 1:50k maps are at a scale that will be very familiar to anyone who has used a LandRanger map.

The map data itself is downloaded over the air so only possible where a signal is present and they are not cached but for most iPhone users who have all you can eat data plans this isn't a huge issue.

Certainly having access to the OS map library is an impressive feat, even more so when you discover the application is currently available from the App Store for free.

Great application for displaying current position on the iPhone using OS mapping, the level of detail when zoomed in is quite astounding.
Its a shame that O2's network coverage when you get in the hills will prevent it from being used in some parts of the Lakes and Dales - Mike

As well as the iPhone here's hoping it will become available for the Blackberry Storm which seems to be neglected!

I just downloaded this but I can't figure out how to view the 1:10,000 maps and there seems to be only two levels of zoom on the 1:50,000 maps- in or out and that's it. Apart from that it looks pretty impressive and free too!

Use the pinch gesture to zoom in/out, zooming in on a 1:50k map will eventually reveal the 1:10k where the data is available.

Does anyone know where the data is being pulled from? If OS are making the data available for free for Iphone users, then they should also allow it for WM/Blackberry/Symbian clients too - just need someone to write the app.

My sentiments exactly - after all we are paying for the OS through our taxes!

Just spent a few minutes looking further into it and the app is using the free OpenSpace service from OS. Means that given the right skills (i.e. more than my abilities) it would be possible to create an app for most devices.

Not quite. The OS actually returns a profit on its services so feeds money back into the public purse.

Somewhat OT but I wonder if OS would still make a profit if they couldn't charge extortionate licencing fees to other public bodies. Whichever way you look at it though, a huge amount of OS is paid for from the public purse.

Sadly it doesn't work without an internet connection. I'm not sure quite how useful it would be to the core users of OS Maps. I wouldn't want to trek off into the sunset in a strange environment with a "might have" map..Still impressive for free nonetheless.

Can only be used on an iPhone which is a real shame (for iPod Touch users anyway - especialy those who tether to another mobile using Joikuspot).

I find that it scrolls / refreshes quite slowly, and it doesn't appear to show footpaths which I expected.

@Milesey - Here's hoping for a good result today. COYI
