After 18monthsish, for the first time pluging the 720go into my laptop and opening "my computer" the TomTom drive is not to be seen, unable to open and add files.
Delving into device manager, disc drives, shows the tomtom, so I uninstall the drives, of course windows XP sees a new device, reinstalls both, but last popup states "problem, device may not work", but I can even open & close drive from "my computer", all seems fine.

All works as should until I unplug the tomtom, and try plugging back in, have to repeat the above to get the tomtom showing in "my computer".

Why is this - and if I can see the drives in device manager why not in my computer. This is happening on 2 laptops, both xp, I have pressed the reset on the tomtom.

Ouch - I worry about the word "unplug". Am I to think that you simply mean "Unplug", not "Safely Remove" USB device? The TomTom device is very "fragile" when disconnecting - you just can't unplug it and get away with it.

For all its faults, I find "Unplugging" the one thing which seems to work perfectly in TomTom Home. So I generally run Home when I'm plugged in - not for Home to do anything, I simply minimise it and then do my business with Windows Explorer. But when I'm finished, I restore Home, then use the Device ... Disconnect Device button and let the device disconnect itself and reboot up to asking me again if I wish to connect to Computer, I select NO, then wait until Device has booted all the way up into map view, then switch it off, then unplug it after it has shut down.

Thanks, dhn and DennisN, yes have seen the tomtom link, device is enabled when the computer sees it, and Dennis, I often use the safely remove hardware jobbie in the task bar, and always leave more than enough time for upload & download etc, I only need to connect to update the cameras, which I do every couple of months so if I have to install each time its not so hard, but I am pulling usb sticks & other drives all the time, they are still plug and play.

Recently, I have found that the "safely remove hardware jobbie" is NOT good enough for the TomTom - I only get reliable results using Home to disconnect. Yes, it's ridiculous, yes everything else I have plugs in, out and shake it all about, no problem. I sometimes even swap mouse and keyboard plugholes with everything switched on and running and still they come back working without the slightest hitch. But Safely Remove gives me nothing but grief with the TomToms. If I don't use Home to disconnect, the things lock up, disappear, don't disconnect even though the drive/storage has disappeared from Explorer. Evil or Very Mad

I will give it a go next time I install Dennis, but for the last 18months its been plug and play Question . But I was thinking it may be a common fault, and a quick fix/patch/backtrack was all I needed.
Thanks again Mick

It is absolutely essential to disconnect a TomTom properly before unplugging it or there is a big risk of corrupting files and it will fail to boot up next time. For a while using disconnect in HOME didn't work properly on my 720 and, as Dennis said, "Safely Remove Hardware" doesn't seem to work with TT devices, so I started right-clicking on it in "My Computer" and choosing "Eject". That works fine for me and it saves having to start HOME if you aren't using it.

But the latest version of HOME is disconnecting mine fine so I'm using it more often than not now.

Hi Calomax
I also Right Click on ‘My Computer’ and then choose ‘Eject’. It works perfectly. I only use ‘Home’ for downloading new Maps and that’s because we have no other choice.
