You use the UnlockWizard which should have been installed when you installed MapSource.
Start - Programs - Garmin(folder) UnlockWizard
Once you have used the UnlockWizard, MapSource will then let you use the new map. |

Not sure why the UNLOCK WIZARD will not let you unlock the map.
On the MapSource Help Menu,
Quote: | Unlocking Map Products in MapSource
If you have a 25-character unlock code included with your device, you can enter it in MapSource.
To unlock a map product in MapSource:
Click Utilities - Manage Map Products.
Click the Unlock Regions tab, and click Add.
Enter the 25-character unlock code.
Enter a comment (optional), and click OK.
To view the unlock code for a product, select the unlock code and click Properties.
To delete the unlock code for a product, select the unlock code and click Delete.

I have a Nuvi 760 which I bought last year and recently bought the NuMaps lifetime option.
All installation steps seemed to go well but over the weekend I went to check a favourite I had added in Italy and discovered that I only seemed to have a scetch map of area, with just one or two roads appearing in area and no details.
I then checked a French favourite and the same very basic map appears. On investigating I only seem to have detailed maps for UK and Ireland.
This seems to be confirmed by the details appearing under Tool/Settings/Map/Map info which gives "CN Europe NT 2009.11, [1] UK and Ireland".
However, in myGarmin it is described as "City Navigator Europe NT 2009.10, Deluxe All REgions, Jan 09"
I sent a message to Garmin Support but have heard nothing back as yet and wonder if anyone else had this problem or can suggest a solution. |

If possible do a FULL backup of your device and existing map first.
On some devices you can IMPORT your existing map into MapSource to save it.
1 Start MapSource
2 Connect your Nuvi to your pc via the usb lead
Depending on what maps are available in MapSource, select the:
City Navigator Europe NT 2009 (from the drop down box - top left)
3 Select the Map Tool icon
4 Place the Map Tool cursor on the map and holding down the left mouse button, drag it over the map area(s) you want on your Nuvi.
The area(s) selected will then be displayed in the left side list box, along with the memory required at the bottom.
If you have selected any wrong area(s) then you can delete them from the list box by either right clicking on it(and select delete map) or just remove the area(s) on the map screen.
5 Now use the Transfer - Send to device menu.
6 Select your device (may take 10 -30 seconds to detect it) (or) sd card etc.
7 Then click the Send button.
Depending on how big the area(s) you are sending, it may take between 3 - 30 mins to send the map. It may look like it is not doing anything at some stages, but it will complete. It goes through several stages before it will say Finished. |

You have not said if you have yet managed to unlock the new map. If you have not unlocked it then do not copy the new map to your device as it will not work and you not be able to use your Nuvi.
If you have registered your Nuvi on the Garmin web site on the MyGarmin page, you can get your current map lock code and any other map code available to you.
To answer your question:
On all the Garmin(s) I have they use a memory card to store the map. I have always copied the map from the card to my pc first. Just to keep a backup.
Then when I have updated the map(s) it has over-writen the map on the card with the new map. So not sure what your Nuvi will do.
Someone else with a Nuvi reading this post - can you comment on that please. And also how you have backed-up your original map before updating it.
holgerdanske can you turn off your Caps Lock please. It is considered as SHOUTING |

Hi PocketGPS,
On my nuvi 255WT, the map is held in the device's internal memory, not on a card. I backed it up (before upgrading the maps) simply by connecting it to the PC and copying all the files from the Garmin to the PC.
I haven't tried moving maps from Mapsource to the device: I didn't need to as I followed the Official Instructions (linked above) and it updated my device and my Mapsource all at the same time. No unlock codes were needed.
To Michael Cahill, for info, my Garmin device states it is CN Europe NT 2009.11. So yours does sound wrong.
Dales. |
