OpenStreetMap - Now YOU can take control of the maps

Just to clear up some confusion in some of the recent posts... yes you can download OSM maps to a PDA! I do this frequently on my WM5 PDA.

Although these may be primarily concerned with logging GPS tracks, they also download the OSM map on the fly, using GPRS/3G/WiFi.

Like one or two others here I had looked at the OSM project a while ago and today I am impressed by the detail - esp locally. I am planning to retire from full time work in July and this is something I should be able to get into - but someone has been very busy in my village - all the footpaths are mapped and been given their correct local names - must find out who it is and see if I can collaborate with them. I've already added the names of a few pubs in the area (they were mapped but not named). Thinks... that's a good excuse. Sorry dear - just out to visit a few pubs in the name of research.

OSM have some very rich data and the project is coming along in leaps and bounds. In many places, the map quality is much better than that of Navteq or TA.

I have used OSM mapping on my Garmin Quest for some time and have more recently installed the PocketEarth app on an iPod touch and iPad. This is OSM data that uses a third party routing engine, so creating routes and subsequent modifications needs an internet connection. After that it's offline performance is excellent and recently took me to southern France on my motorcycle and then a tour of Holland using the cycle "mode" that has all the recognised two wheel routes worldwide

The app screams out for the option of speed camera alerts - wonder if anyone has given this some thought? Perhaps even just as an overlay as we have for Garmin legacy devices?
