|
|
I got a 530 about two weeks ago but as I haven't needed to use it have only charged it up and had a quick look at it. Does the LMG start from the date TT Home is used?
I have the 8.014 app and 810.1887 map as standard. I know that there is an update due soon but don't know whether to wait until the last minute or do it sooner.
Is it worth installing QuickGPS (I think that's what it's called) as I notice the TTFF is slower than my old PDA version and bluetooth receiver.
Thanks for any advice.

QuickGPSFix is probably worth downloading into a brand new device, but after that, if you use it fairly regularly, it's not worth bothering, just marketing hype!
There is a great murmuring and muttering about when "The new map" will be released. Current guesses have ranged from 11th February to 9th April. The first was wrong, the second is not yet wrong. It is possible that somebody at TomTom knows, but I don't expect you'll be able to find that person. The present latest map is v815, which is later than yours, released approx 11th November. TT have said they'll issue maps quarterly, so maybe the new map is now overdue. Some say it's not yet due because the 11th November map was issued early.
There is also some confusion about the start date of the 30 days for the Latest Map Guarantee. My advice would be to regard it as 30 days from the date you purchased the device (gives you a couple of weeks to sweat it out). This is because sometimes there is trouble with the LMG function and the sufferer (you) has to contact TomTom for it to work. That will require you to provide TT with a copy of your receipt to prove ownership and link to 30 days - they will NOT accept your word that it has not been used until "today". I got a free TT with my new Renault van, so I didn't have a proof of purchase, only the invoice for the van. But the TT came separately by post a month after the new van. I had to get a letter from Renault HQ to confirm my TT had not been posted until xx date, before TT would give me the LMG for it!!
In any event, when you decide to go for map update, you must do the application updates first - accept download of application update, but do not accept map. When you are offered updates, there is usually a "More Info" button/link which will tell you what version you are being offered. The present latest application for your device is v8.301. _________________ Dennis

Thanks Dennis, very useful information.
Will wait a while then do the update as you suggest.

No they haven't, Dennis. They've said they'll issue four maps a year! _________________ Anita

From www.tomtom.com/page/mapupdateservice
'Anyone with a TomTom device can take advantage of our smart TomTom Map Update Service. This service gives you every single release of your map over a 12-month period, from the equivalent of just £7.95 per quarter. That’s four new maps a year!' _________________ Tomtom GO 1005 LIVE

Yes, you're right Anita.
I think this must be down to TT's command of the English language. Either they're not very good and don't understand the confusion they have left. Or they are very, very good and have left themselves a perfect scenario to release when they choose. That even leaves them off the hook as to when they might incorporate any verified Mapshare results!!
They say "four maps a year".
They say "£xx a quarter".
But they actually charge "£xx a year". _________________ Dennis
