Hi,
I just bought a TomTom Navigator 3 kit and it arrived today. I've installed the software onto my Ipaq 5450 but I think there is a problem with the GPS (it's a grey TomTom GPS).
When I connect the power to the car, the light on the power plug lights and the ipaq starts flashing to say it's powered/charging but I dont get a light on the GPS.
If I go into Settings -> GPS to show the GPS info program, it's set to "TomTom Navigator GPS" and "Serial Cable on COM1:" but whatever I change these to, I can't get the status screen to say anything - it's all just greyed out, including the "dish....ipaq" symbol which the manual says shows a connection between the ipaq and gps.
Is the GPS faulty or am I doing something wrong?
Should the light on the GPS light when it's powered?
The box was still sealed with celephane when it arrived...
Thanks!

The tom tom gps receiver is a tricky one, once you get used to it its quite simple you need to hold the button down for approx 2 seconds for it to fire up.
the left hand light will flash blue when attempting to communicate with your ppc and the right hand green light will flash when you have a fix
the left hand light will also go permenent red when a charge is required or it is taking a charge, if the unit is fully charged there will be no red light regardless weather it is connected to the charger or not.
Its a tricky on off procedure thats for sure. but when working
its very efficient.
I hope that helps
also turning off is a 2 second hold as well

Hi,
Yeah, mine is the wired version - there is no buttons, just 1 light.
Thanks anyway

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the TomTom wired GPS - but make sure any plugs are pressed fully home, and that you have the right cable and/or car kit (the one for the XDA will charge a modern iPAQ, but the GPS won't work).
To use a serial port GPS, such as your wired GPS, you do need to disable any keyboard drivers.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply - the cable is hard in and I think it's the right one - It's marked:
IC-IPQ38-GPS X0100310 For iPAQ 38xx/39xx CLA-00H5.
and I gather the IPAQ 5450 uses the same leads as the 38xx/39xx.
Thanks

It does indeed - the same cable is used on the 3800 series, 3900 series, 545x, 555x, 221x, 41xx and 43xx iPAQs (where x is any number).
The fault could be with either the cable or the GPS - either of those seems more likely than the iPAQ considering that the light on the GPS isn't coming on. I think all you can do is work with your retailer on resolving this - it's looking like one or other of the TomTom hardware items you have is faulty.

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply.
I've already been in contact with the retailer and they are sending another GPS out.
Thanks
