Another newbie problem with Checkpoint

I am totally new to satellite navigation and PDA`s. I recently bought secondhand a Dell Axim with Tom Tom 2. The Satnav works a treat. I decided to download Checkpoint and using POIsync the latest speed camera database. After a few hours I think I managed to install it all and following the walk through on the website managed to set it up. When I went to try it out on some local speed cameras it gave me no warning at all, and adding some new ones to the Checkpoint database was a bit hit and miss and I now don`t get warned about those even though I have managed to find them in the database. I`m sure I must be doing something obviously wrong but I can`t work it out. I`ve put a cross in the POI options to show them on the map, set a warning sound, I don`t know what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are having the same problem I had. Look at the topic "Help appreciated!" further down in this forum and look at the last couple of messages - I believe this will solve your problem!!

Thanks for the advice. There are some useful points but I did set up a warning sound from the windows folder and then did what you did and tried a long time installed speed camera but got no warning at all. It didn`t even appear on the map for me. I`ll plod on but I don`t seem to be getting anywhere at all. All sorts of weird things now seem to be happening. Just got back from a run down to Birmingham and after about 5 minutes the PDA switches itself off but turn it back on and the map is still there. I got fed up in the end and left it off. I think I`ll stick to an atlas

Dunno about the checkpoint problem but could the PDA switching itself off be due to you running the system on battery? If so have you looked in settings/battery and check if the PDA is set to power itself down after 5 minutes with no action? (No action being no key presses etc from yourself - NOT a programme running) It sure sounds like this as when you switch back on the programme is still running - 2 ways to get around this....

1) Power the PDA from the car cigarette lighter so you are not running down the PDA battery

2) check the power down settings - particularly the one for when external power is used, make this setting "Never" and then however long a run you are on, if the unit is powered your programme will still nbe running and the PDA will not switch off

Thanks for that. I was using the cigarette lighter to power it, I`ll check the settings. I thought that because I was on the motorway and nothing was happening it was shutting down until I needed to turn off does this happen with TomTom? Like I said I am new to all of this and I`m really struggling to understand Dell Axim nevermind TomTom.

Yes it does happen to me (or would have done if I had not changed the settings) it is nothing whatsoever to do with tomTom but with the settings in windows on your PDA.

I think the letters RTFM may also come into play here Mr. Green

You`re probably right. I think I`ve jumped in expecting the Axim to work exactly like windows, but I`m getting there. Each time I perform a soft reset things seem to work a bit better. One thing I have discovered is that all the cameras I was using to test Checkpoint are not in the database even though they`ve been there for a long time, this is probably the simple explanation why I wasn`t being warned. Like you say I should RTFM a bit more

Davemazo: Running a Dell Axim X5 myself and I had all the problems when I first set up (I'm another who has never RTFM). Has you pick bits up other seem to fall in place. Couple of things to note..

The is no "Never" setting on the power settings. just untick the boxes.

Are you sure its not just dimming the backlight. This is set in the "Brighness" settings.

In regards to checkpoint..

Don't think that just because the camera has been there for a long time that it will be included. I noticed 2 long standing cameras missing from the database, (I'm sure that 1 of them was the first in the area) where as the newer ones where in the database.

When adding cameras they are not put straight into the database. They are added to a new POI file called checkpoint.ov2 . The idea being that this file can then be emailed to be added to the database without sending all the ones already included.

The way around this is to make a copy of the camera bmp file and rename it checkpoint.bmp . Make sure Checkpoint is ticked as viewable in TomToms POI settings and set up checkpoint the same as the camera database in Checkpoints Overlay settings.

If you are using Checkoint 3.x then you can move newly added POIs over to whichever POIs file (usualy the camera database) within checkpoint, but the expert on these forums mostly recommend you stick to version 2.x

Thanks slimboy. With regard to the Axim turning itself (or the screen) off I think it was just one of those annoying Windows things or possibly me fiddling too much while I was sat in the car waiting for the wife. As for everything else you`ve confirmed really what I learnt the other night after spending a few hours playing about, I sussed out the bmp thing and now the map is filled up with camera icons. Things have started falling into place and doing what they should be doing. The missing speed cameras is understandable, after all there are so many of the

. Just one thing left. To update the list do I email the checkpoint.ov2 file, if so when and where to. Thanks for all your help

checkpoint.ov2 files to cameras@pocketgpsworld.com

Remember this is not a commercial database. It is maintained by users sending in the locations. This means that the database is not complete and that there may be incorrect (or now removed) locations. If you do spot a incorrect one you can click on the location and it should show its name that will include a number, report this number to the same email as above.

Only thing I can think of why the older cameras are not present is people now they are there and don't realise that they havent had a warning. Where as the new ones get the "When did that appear, best add that for the next time"..

Give the Dell a couple of weeks and you will useing it like a pro.
