Tomtom 720/730/t

Hi all,

I've been trawling through the forums and can't seem to find the answer so had to post....I'm narrowing down my GPS choice to a TOMTOM 720/730 and have a couple of final questions:

-Is there any other difference between the TOMTOM 720 and 730 other than the colour?
-Also is there a 720/730 'T' model or does the TMC come inbuilt now? Some sites list them as a 'T' others don't!
-I have a contract phone with unlimited GPRS connection, can I use this with the 730 for frequent updates when on the move instead of paying for the LIVE subscription? Or do you have to pay TOMTOM for the LIVE subscription and then the data charges ontop?

Lots of questions! Rest assured I'll be choosing your DB when I've made a decision!

Welcome to the forum, the 730 and 720 are the same device in terms of hardware with the only differnce being a slight colour change. There are differences in the software installed to the units, but these changes are marginal.
Both devices have been sold with and without the RDS-TMC receiver, the T suffix denotes a unit with the RDS-TMC in the box - the receiver is not built in to any of the TomTom devices.
Both the 720 and 730 can use a GPRS connection when using the Bluetooth comms via a mobile phone, but to get a traffic service this way requires subscription to the TomTom traffic service - this is not the same service as the Live system which supplies the HD Traffic.

Shop around as the 720 can be purchased for under £115 the 730 will cost you more than double that! - Mike

Hi I believe the tom tom go 720 only has uk and ireland maps
and the 730 has western europe maps, The 730T comes with a tmc receiver which will keep you up to date with any delays on your route.
I have the 730T and dont subscribe to the live updates via mobile as you will need to upgrade your mobile contract for data downloads and in my view its not worth the money, I keep my speed cameras up to date via this site and update my maps etc with tom tom home via the tom tom site. You should also get a free 30 day map update with your new tom tom so you can obtain the latest map as the one shipped with your new satnav maps may have been updated after shipping.

Both the 720 and the 730 are supplied with the Western European Mapping, it is the 520 and 530 that have the UK & ROI mapping installed.

Which ever device you purchase perform a full backup to the PC using Windows Explorer BEFORE updating any software of mapping on the device - Mike

)I'm after is European maps, speed cameras and some intelligent re-routing. I think a 720T will fit the bill nicely although I do like the LIVE HD traffic, but the extra subscription is a no-no.

I think a 720T combined with my corporate Blackberry for updates updates should suffice.

It is possible to get Weather and Traffic information on your TomTom via a mobile phone data connection but services like Traffic require an annual subscription to use the service.
You cannot receive maps etc via a phone connection straight to the device, imagine a 2GB map download, even using HSDPA with a good network coverage it would take ages and flatten the phones battery before you got the map - and that assumes the server at TomTom doesn't fall over in the middle of the download - Mike

Just for completeness I thought I'd update this thread...

I've just received the device, first off it looks lovely!

Does anyone have any experience backing the device up using a Mac? I'm going to see if Carbon Copy Cloner can do the business...

Checklist of things to do:

1 - Backup
2 - Update
3 - Speed camera db from here
4 - Ask TomTom about their map guarantee?? When's v8 (that's the upcoming release isn't it?) due to be released?

I believe you can use Finder to do the Backup.

V8 Maps, and V8 Software, are currently in use.

To update the device you need to use the TomTom Home software, you should download the latest MAC version from This Page, the button has the Apple logo next to it.

You might have to update the software on the TomTom more than once, you need it to be running 8,300 - to check this tap the Sat Strength meter followed by the version box, the resultant page will give you information about the software version and Map name/ version.

With the device running 8,300 next you should use the Latest Map Guarantee to update the map to v815 (the current map release), again this has to be accomplished through the TomTom Home application.

When you have the device running the latest software and map installed back the whole thing up again using the mac, try to avoid using the backup option within the TomTom Home software as its not too reliable and doesn't allow multiple backups of the device running different software versions - Mike

Thanks all. I had just finished registering on the TOMTOM page and found they did a Mac version! I thought I was going to have to use my Virtual PC to update this beauty!

Just incase anyone else runs into this issue:

When updating to the latest map version (using TOMTOMs map guarantee) there wasn't enough space on the built in memory. I uninstalled the recently updated Kate voice and everything went through find. Then installed the new voice.

Backup taken, onto the speed cameras.
