It has been mentioned on another thread but when did the direction arrow disappear?

I found it a handy indicator, it pointed directly towards the location and underneath gave the direct distance of the location.

I have been told it had been lost in software updates. I have a TomTom One version one or two and its bang up-to-date with software updates and yet that arrow remains.

At what point did it disappear and why was it removed?

Im looking at getting a 520 and surprised it will not have the direction of location arrow.
Thanks,
Tc

Direction arrow? You mean the compass I think? Yes it has had much of its functionality removed with v8.

It is still there in a lesser form, you can select it in "Status Bar Preferences" but it now only points north. You can also have the direction showing as "N", "S", "E", "W", and the degrees on the status bar but it's nowhere as good as the old compass.

If you search for "Compass", you'll find quite a few threads about it.

I have an up-to-date TomTom One and yet it still has this compas feature.

I am seriously looking at getting a refurb Tom Tom One XL from Total PDA. Will I still have the feature on the One XL?

I can't keep up with all the updates but has v8 been released for the ONE's?

This will depend upon which version of software and map is installed to the device when you get it.
Whilst it is possible to roll the software version back to a point where the fully featured pointer was available it might not work with the newer map releases - if TomTom don't resurrect the old style pointer with the full options then there is little that can be done, given time and the requirement to update software/ maps will eradicate the old style pointer.

I still think this dumbing down is to do with the common software for all platforms, currently the only device(s) that cannot display the old style compass pointer are the x40 units due to the extra short cut icons that are on the screen taking up valuable real estate - Mike

One XL
One Third Edition
and the newer units with the "Easy Port mount"

All these can use the vs8 software - not too sure about the earlier units though - Mike

How do you get it to do that. I have a 730 and I cannot find the option.

Change Preferences/ Status Bar Preferences and its one of the options available on that screen, bear in mind you cannot have everything selected on though as there isn't enough room - Mike

In reply to Darren's question, the One uses v7.903 firmware to enable it to use the v8 maps. It therefore retains the old style compass.

This indicates the direction arrow had vanished from the One now?
